"Host" based Flash
Very long story very short.
I'm involved in the development of a web site that will have a Flash AS3 based design utility that will generate a bitmap for use to generate the customer's design on a product. The bitmap output needs to be at least 2500 x2500 pix. We wanted 3000 x 3000 but AS3 maxes @ 2880. The process to generate the 2500 x 2500 bitmap is talking about 2min. TOO LONG. We are looking at moving the bulk of the design utility Flash function away from the client to the server hosting the site or an additional (possibly multiple) servers/computers attached to the primary server. This way the host server/computer system can chug away while the customer's system is not tied up. Can anybody out there point me in the direction of a site they think is running Flash in this fashion? Any other thoughts/comments? fmg Last edited by pdxireland; 04-17-2008 at 03:46 PM. Re: "Host" based Flash
are you sure there's no way to speed up the generation time?
i'm just curious because i'm pretty sure photoshop express(https://www.photoshop.com/express/index.html?wf=signin) is a flash application... and yet it deals with large resolutions in small amounts of time Cheers, Jamey |

Re: "Host" based Flash
Hello again,
I do not think this will cover our needs. The issue is splitting the Flash workload. We would like to run the Flash design utility & related functions (the heavy load) on the server, NOT the client's machine. This way the the time required to generate the bitmap & other required files will not take over the client (customer's) machine & he or she can still move around our site, heading for checkout, etc. I am not the one building this site, just looking for options to offer my team. fmg |

Re: "Host" based Flash
Okay, i suggested looking at PS Express as i believe it Runs flash off of the server rather than the client's machine(i only assume this because you upload an image to the server, then edit it, then download it again when you want it). So someone obviously does do this.
I don't know of anyone who does it tho sorry. Could you not use flash to design the bitmap then use some server-side language to generate it (e.g. design the bitmap in flash, when it needs generating a button is pressed, that button redirects to a page sending the image's parameters with it) would that not work? Sorry, i know it's not an ample solution but it makes some sence. |
