Spell Check Problem Front Page

Hello,
I am new to the forum. I do not know where to post this question exactly, so I picked this discussion.
I have had Front Page 2000 for 7 years.
This last week I downloaded Expression Web Beta2. I played with it, and liked the new features.
Then I went back to Front Page. I opened my index page (it is in french and I had opened it in Espressions) and all the words with accents have characters insert, there is no spell check and some formating was lost!!!
The only change to my computer has been Expressions.
I moved Expressions to the external hard drive and ran Front Page repair. Did not work ( I did re boot).
I removed Front Page totally and reinstalled. Did not work ( I did re boot).

I tried a Custom install. Did not work ( I did re boot).

What has happened to my Front Page program?
[ the Expression Beta2 expires July 1).
Thank you
Sue

Question Re: Spell Check Problem Front Page

Hi sue127 welcome to the forum.

Couple questions -

Do you have a backup of your website files? Perhaps you have not uploaded the recent index.html to your site?

My thoughts are that expression may "clean" the file of frontpage "code" upon saving. I am searching online for that answer right now.

So when you opened index in frontpage is all that nice FP "code" gone? That would explain the lack of accents and format.

Have you looked at your files online to see if they have been modified like the index.html on your computer?

From what I have read so far is that expression is Microsoft's attempt to create a more browser friendly design program. Doing away with frontpage "code"(bots) and utilizing css are are just a couple of the "features" of this program.

Alright. Haven't found a great answer for you yet, but I did read that expression does keep your FP code intact and should not remove it. Have you looked at other pages in FP that were not opened/edited in expression to see if format/accents were intact?

Either someone with more knowledge on FP/EW will chime in or I will learn as I help you

Also a good time to look at a backup ritual so if something were to happen to your HD and/or website you could recover them with minimal loss.

Forgot a question...

Since you just reinstalled FP have you updated it to the most recent version, if possible?

Re: Spell Check Problem Front Page

Hi,
The spell check was completely gone. If I clicked ABC icon, Front Page totally crashed and closed.

Today I turned off the extended hard drive where I put Expressions, and did another (must be time number 5) Repair with the Front Page CD and the spell check is working again! However some format problem still exists. I will be working on the format this afternoon.

I was working with the current online version. I had downloaded it just previous to doing some of the work.

I had gone in with Expressions and fixed a coding error (I had a <p> without a </p>) and therefore did a save.

So a little leary of working between the two programs again. I will not mix and try to use both systems on the same pages again.
I could see that by making changes in Expression Web and saving, the old version of Front Page may have problems (just like new versions Word [ .doc ] can not always be opened by older versions of Word.
But that said, why did it destroy the spell check system totally?? The spell check did not work on any pages and as I said, crashed when I clicked the ABC icon.

Thanks for your response.
Sue

Thumbs Up Re: Spell Check Problem Front Page

Glad your spell check is back! By chance do you have Microsoft office installed? Have/did you see that spell checked worked in word while you were having the problem with frontpage? Sounds like from posts online those two programs are connected somehow. Even looks like frontpage is updated via office update.

Just glad it's working for you. Let us know if we can be of any help, especially with fixing your format.

Re: Spell Check Problem Front Page

Hi again,
Just a note to reply to your question.
I checked Microsoft Word right away and it was not a problem.

Still strange. But since Expressions is gone, all is working??

Thanks for the reply.
