php - error checking for price

I want user to input price. So, i need to use php to check if the user input correct price.

Example, user may input 2,200.20. So, i want to convert it to 2200.20 so that i can store in database which use decimal.

Any idea how to check if user input correct price and convert it?

one simple way would be to find and replace characters that might be included.

ie.

$amount = str_replace(",","",$_POST['form_amount']);
