Desperate help, my brain is caving in....

Hello

I have a problem with my site www.jonathanstubbs.co.uk that I built on dreamweaver cs3.

My site doesn't work on Firefox, and I have no idea why.

Dreamweaver flags it up a problem with my style sheet, but I don't know what this could be.

Any ideas? Help would be very much appreciated.

Hi Jonathan & Carsey

I hate to contradict such an eminent guru as Carsey - he is far more qualified than me, However I just tried in Firefox and although the index page renders nicely in both FF & IE7, The links to the other pages in FF do not fetch the page. All I get is a blank page with the "Done" message in the status bar.

The site works perfectly in IE7.

I looked at your link coding and could not see any problem.

May I suggest that you remove the css from the index & a couple of the target pages temporarily and see if it is the css that is the cause.

Re: Desperate help, my brain is caving in....

Hi,

Yes the problem is on Firefox that the links load blank pages. The site seems to be absolutely fine on safari and ie7.

I have tried deleting the css from various pages, including the index page, and it doesn't seem to make any difference, I also tried to delete mystyle.css sheet, and that makes no difference either.

Dreamweaver picks up no compatibility problems with any browsers.... I am clueless as to what the problem could be. Any more ideas?

Thanks

Have you tried it when removed the code that suppresses the underlining of the links?

I have just gone right back to absolute basics and produced a very simple 3 page replication in DW CS3 of your navigation that works in both FF & IE.
See:
http://www.websilk.co.uk/temp

I suggest that you do something similar, adding the various functions in you css one at a time until you find the cuprit!

Once you have found it, please let me know!

Regards

Re: Desperate help, my brain is caving in....

Well that is strange, it works on firefox for me but not you two What version of firefox are you both using? Im using FF3 beta 2 so they must have altered the coding to better suit things.

EDIT:

Why have you 2 different style sheets?

<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css"
href="mystyle.css" />
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css"
href="index.css" />

I also suggest you merge your index.css sheet into mystyle.css as it could be browsers getting confused with that and the short piece in your HTML.

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-GB; rv:1.8.1.7) Gecko/20070914 Firefox/2.0.0.7

(V2.0.0.7)

Hi Carsey - with our versions of FF, the links return blank pages - no page content.

As you can see, I have suggested a back to basics & No CSS and then progressive add CSS Functions. I should have thought about a merge.

It could also be some compatibility issues with linking to his .org.uk site as a frame, but I wouldnt have thought it would be the issue

The view source of the returned 'blank page' is a 'not support frames' notice: eg:
Code:
	<HTML>
		<HEAD>

				<title>jonathanstubbs.co.uk</title>

				<meta name="keywords" content="jonathan, fine art, oil, stubbs, painting, art, falmouth, exhibition, cornwall, christian, contemporary, drawing, oil paint, sunrise, seamonsters, university college falmouth, bath, gallery, work">

				<meta name="description" content="Jonathan Stubbs Contemporary Fine Art">

		</HEAD>
		<FRAMESET ROWS="100%,*" FRAMESPACING=0 FRAMEBORDER=0 BORDER=0>
			<FRAME SRC="http://www.jonathanstubbs.org.uk" SCROLLING="AUTO" NORESIZE FRAMEBORDER=0 BORDER=0 MARGINHEIGHT=3 MARGINWIDTH=3>

			<noframes>
				<BODY BGCOLOR="#FFCB97">
					<font face="verdana" color="navy" size="2">
						<P>&nbsp;</p><P>&nbsp;</p><P>&nbsp;</p>
						<center>
							<h2>jonathanstubbs.co.uk<br>
								Your browser does not support frames.<BR>
								To view our web site click here:<BR>
								<a href="http://www.jonathanstubbs.org.uk">
									http://www.jonathanstubbs.org.uk
								</a>
							</h2>
							<P>&nbsp;</p><P>&nbsp;</p>
						</center>
						<P>
							<b>
							For more information contact
							<a href="mailto:webmaster@jonathanstubbs.co.uk">

							</a>
						</P>
						<p>
							<a href="http://www.domain-parking.net/">
								<img src="images/dptiny.jpg" border="0">
							</a>
						</P>
					</font>
				</BODY>
			</noframes>
		</FRAMESET>
	</HTML>
It could be something to do with frames but I don't see the original site in IE as a frameset... BUT i can't understand why it does not render the text - just a totally blank page!

Re: Desperate help, my brain is caving in....

Actually, I've never used a doctype, so any suggestions about which one I could use? I've looked it up and there seems to be millions...

Re: Desperate help, my brain is caving in....

Hi jonathan,

I see on gallery.css (as well as other css files you use for each page) you define a z-index of -5 for div.site. Firefox hence hides this div behind div.wrapper which has a z-index of zero.

Be careful when using z-index for anything except text-book situations, each browser handles the property differently.

Remove the z-index on div.site and you're good to go -- I haven't checked if there are any negative side effects in other browsers but that's your problem in FF in any case.

Re: Desperate help, my brain is caving in....

Eugene, thanks a lot, that was bang on.

There doesn't seem to be any side effects with safari. I will check with ie next time I am on a pc.

Thanks everybody for being so helpful - problem solved!

Jonathan
