Re: looking to buy

@ leduc alain: I'm not sure that you have to buy software. And by the time he knows the language of XHTML/CSS, notepad is all you need.
But to answer your question, Dreamweaver (from Adobe) is a very good program, but there is a free variant called Nvu which works very well.

Let him play around with that one first, you can always buy.

Re: looking to buy

Yeah, Nvu is a good choice for the beginners...it's powerful enough to help them as they grow. Dreamweaver is good when they're more advanced and Nvu can't keep up :)

Re: looking to buy

If he wants to be a "real" web designer and get serious about it, the first things to jump into are html/xhtml, css, and current web standards! Here's a great resource for basic tutorials on getting started.

And if he wants to get ideas and additional help/info etc. visit a good magazine seller and browse through the 'web design' section and get one or two magazines to evaluate which is mostly aimed at his level and interest, then perhaps subscribe to one.

Here in the UK, the local colleges hold evening classes - perhaps theer are similar schemes in your country (France?)

No, you do not have to keep the computer on all the time...

In ver simple terms, once the page/s have been designed, all you have to do is save a copy of those pages on another computer that is on the internet. The computer on Internet is called the 'server' or 'web server' but it is virtually the same as the computer on your desk.

This is how it works:
The pages are on your computer. You have to have access to a web server. Many Internet Service Providors (ISPs) give you free access to a web server so that you can 'put up' your own 'home page' or 'web site'.

The process of transferring the pages from your home computer to the web server is known as uploading to the server. There is some simple (free) software that helps you to perform this process known as FTP. (File Transfer Protocol) All that the FTP software does is to ensure that your computer and talk the webs server computer properly.

What you need to do is contact your ISP and ask if you have web space with your Internet Connection. If the answer is yes, you need to ask for the following details
1) The address of the server (FTP Host)
2) The directory to be used?
3) The Login or user name.
4) The Password to be used to access the server.

Once you have those 4 details sorted out, all you have to do is enter them into the appropriate boxes in the FTP software and away you go!

It is just like saving files from one hard drive to another. The only difference is that the first hard drive is on your computer and the other hard drive is at your ISPs location. It is the ISP's computers that are switched on all the time. Once you have saved (transfered) the files on the ISP's machine, you can switch off your machine...

Hello again

I'm pleased that my posting helpd you to get a basic understanding of how the process works.

It is difficult fro me to recommend free FTP software (Also known as a free FTP Client) because I use Dreamweaver professional web design software that has the FTP software built in. Although Dreamweaver is generally rated as the best there is, it is not recommended to a novice on thegrounds of cost!

I have just done a quick 'Google' search for "Free FTP" and the very first one seems to be able to do what you want:
http://www.smartftp.com/

I have never used this. Perhaps other folk can add a link to this thread suggesting or recommending other FREE FTP software.

All the best wishes Alain - If you need more help - just ask...

WOW! That IS the tops... The best there is!

DW is incredibly powerful....

Yes, it has a built in FTP client. Below is a screen grab from DW 8.0.2

Enter the appropriate details in the 4 boxes and away you go...

Re: looking to buy

Filezilla is a good free FTP client if the FTP included in Dreamweaver turns out to be a flop.

P.S. for learning DW I highly recommend "The Missing Manual"
