Software for a blogserver?

I have my own domain and webspace. I am looking for software to install that will let me allow multiple people to install their own blogs and give each one their own password. I teach in an orphanage in China and want to be able to give the people that send me a money the gift of having their own blog in an environment that is wholesome. What is this kind of software called? Is this called blog serving software? It would be really cool if one of the following programs could do this:

b2evolution
Nucleus
pMachine Free
WordPress

Drupal
Geeklog
Joomla
Mambo Open Source
PHP-Nuke
phpWCMS
phpWebSite
Post-Nuke
Xoops

because they are choices I already have from my host. I have started to check individual software but it is difficult to find an answer to this question - all of this software seems to be open source and the documentation is pretty scanty.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Re: Software for a blogserver?

What is wrong with the software being open source? That's why it is free, by the way.

WordPress is a pretty standard blogging software used on countless web sites. You just install that and have people sign up on it (like "yoursite.com/blog"). You'd be the administrator, so you can moderate what people put on their blogs and such.

Re: Software for a blogserver?

Sorry...I have nothing against open source software. I use them as much as possible and contribute whenever I can. The only down side of OSS is that at times like this the software is often not documented well enough to make answering this kind of question easy. How do you set up wordpress so that people can sign up on it? Is it possible that my webhost has set it up so that this will not happen?

Re: Software for a blogserver?

@ pengyou: I can't tell you what software to use, since I do not use it to blog. All these blogging software have a website on which there must be contact email address or form. I think it is better to ask them the question you asked here. They will be the ones which can answer you the best...

Also, you might want to take a look at these sites, where you can compare blogging software:

number2
number3
number4

I use simplePHPblog. It requires ONLY that your server has PHP support. No databases and drag-n-drop installation.

Then don't use OS software that is not well supported. WordPress has a lot of support, which is a reason why I suggested it.

It automatically does that, last I checked.

Your webhost probably does not block that. I don't see a valid reason to do so, anyways. cPanel sets them up to run as the stock program - so you should be fine.

Re: Software for a blogserver?

Thanks! I am new to this blogging stuff so the dialog is helpful. Wordpress has a different version to allow multiple people to have blogs on the same webhosting account. My webhost, it seems, does not have this package installed. I am looking at a program called b2evolution. It was designed to allow multiple people - I think up to 1000 - use the same installation.

BTW, the name of the Wordpress version that allows for multiple users is Wordpress mu (I think mu means multiple user)
