Re: Need advice on creating a personal website

@ cryingvalor:
1. decide about what topic you want your webpage to be about
2. read, read, and read and read a bit more and write down the information you want to be displayed on your webpage
3. decide and make a layout of your webpage to be on paper: how do you want it to look like (colorschemes ect.), how are the (sub)pages going to be (inter)connected ect.
4. in general: create a logo and name to fill the header and create your pages in (X)HTML & CSS
5. test
6. publish

If possible, ask somewhat more specific questions. These are better to answer...

Make sure it's something you're genuinely interested in and will want to maintain. Try to avoid "flavor of the month" interests and if you want people to be interested in your site, try to make it useful and interesting to read. If you have original content that you enjoyed enough to write about, people are going to be more likely to read your site, bookmark it, and recommend it to others.

Also make sure you have room to grow in this interest. If you love your car and want to write about it - that's great - but how much are you going to expand on how much you love your car? Now if you're interested in modifying your car and plan on writing articles on your modifications and how others can do it too (especially with pictures) - THAT is something that only has a limit of your imagination and how far you're willing to go with the concept. Plus it would attract people who want to do cool unique things with their car - even if they don't have the same one you do...so you'd get plenty of views and interest, as long as your content is quality and interesting.

At the end of the day, the goal isn't to get millions of visitors or show that you know everything about card tricks or something...it's to set up your own nook on the edge of the internet and write about something you really like whether it's your car, computer, or if you enjoy writing about the interesting events that come about during your day.

Re: Need advice on creating a personal website

Keep it simple, especially at first. Avoid overusing moving items - this goes for waving flags and bouncing graphics as well as flash.

I'm not saying don't use any of these things, but don't put too many, and don't just scatter them about randomly. A row of waving flags as links might work well for a site with an international audience, but randomly scattered wiggly images just there "'cause you can" seriously distract and detract from whatever message you are trying to convey.

ALSO,

Use a good word processor with spelling and grammar checking capabilities for all the writing you put on your page. Avoid chat-talk short-words unless you are absolutely certain that everyone interested in your site knows what they mean.

Leave a blank line between paragraphs to help keep them readable and follow all the composition rules you learned in school. There will be times when bending or breaking a grammar rule is what you need to get your point across, but these will only be effective if the rest of your essay is grammatically correct.

Re: Need advice on creating a personal website

@ cryingvalor: [parent-mode] any information you put on your personal webpage, is open for everyone. That also includes compagnies who you might/going to work for, people who do not like you, people that want to take advantage of you ect. So perhaps it is better to use something like Hyves, Myspace ect. where you can set restriction on who can view your information. Of course, this can also been done by yourself on your own webpage. Either way, never put your personal information like phone numbers, address ect. on the internet, it will be found and abused. [/parent mode]
