Search engines index-page address problems

L.S.,

When I checked my referrer-logfile I found out that some search engines have logged my site as www.mywebsite.com and some others as www.mywebsite.com/index.html. I would like synchronise all search engines to register my site as www.mywebsite.com.

Since I do not know which and how many search engines have registered my website can I best do this with a 301 redirect? Or is there a better method?

Thanks, KoosHopeloos

I'm not sure if there is a way to change it. If you removed index.html, then the search engine would crawl until it found another default item. I've never tried anything like this before.
