Starting Programming

I am just starting programming as a hobby ( yea i know a dumb idea) but i need some pointers if you guys and gals could help that would be great.

1.what is a good compiler that I can use in Windows. I have been doing some research on it and so far found this one . If you can take a look at it and see if it is a good one or not. If not where can I go to get a good one at.

2.is there any great books that i can get that will help me understand C++ if i got it right you can use this on windows pc without haveing to use soliaris or Uninx (sorry i bet i misspelled that) Any comments or idea would be great.

thanks

Now I don't do too much programming myself. However, I always recommend the "For Dummies" series for new programmers.

microsoft visual.net

i use microsoft visual.net 2003 works great it's easy to work with and well more options with it than other C++ compilers. Some people don't like it because it took away some things and replaced them with other things. but thos people are ususally users that are used to writng in C not in C++ so that should be a good program for u try it out .

C++ Fundamentals (CyberRookies I believe) is what I started with. It's a great book for beginners.
