Video and photo editing software problems ! Please reply, thank you !

A few days ago I noticed that My VirtualDub software will let me edit a video but after I save the video and play it the audio and video is way out of synch and and in some parts there is no sound. When I tried the same thing In AVI Demux My computer freezes and I have to crash my computer. In Handbrake I can process a video but then when I play the video I have the same sync problem that I described in VirtualDub . Also My Corel Paint Shop Pro x2 software
will not let me edit photos. Last night I was able to edit 1 photo then when I tried to edit more photos my computer froze and I had to crash it !

Could something be blocking these programs from running on my computer ?
Maybe, a system or program setting ? Can anyone tell me how to change these settings ? If that is what the problem is !

Thank you !

Amanda

Re: Video and photo editing software problems ! Please reply, thank you !

Give the specs of the original video you tried to edit, and the final video you got (the one that's out of sync). I'll want to know container, video codec, and audio codec.
You can use either gspot (best for AVI files) or mediainfo for that.
Also mention what player you're using and what codecs you have installed.
Important: when you opened your original file for editing in VirtualDub, did you get a VBR (variable bit rate) audio warning?

Then check the CPU usage during playback. Right-click the taskbar and look in task manager at the performance tab. Sometimes CPU-intensive video will seem to lag behind the audio when it's actually stuck behind decoding. Just check if it's at 100%. I at least want to rule that out.
Then try an alternate player, like VLC Media Player and Media Player Classic Home Cinema (very lean programs - you can uninstall them later leaving no leftover debris on your hard drive).

As for photo editing and paint shop pro, I'm not knowledgeable with either, and I have no idea if the crashes are related to anything else. You could check in the event viewer (administrative tools in control panel), application log, for individual crashes (they're usually named error - application error) (double-click each to read info). Sometimes a crash will tell you what module (a dll for instance) caused the crash.
The crashing problem is harder to track because it could be anything. Have you made any changes (updated drivers, installed programs) prior to the crash? could also be hardware, or overheating.

I am unable to send you the screencaps of the media Info specs for my video ! No, I didn't get a VBR message in VirtualDub. I'm using the standard K-Lite Codec pack. My video is in H264 MP4 Video Format with aac audio .

Re: Video and photo editing software problems ! Please reply, thank you !

I haven't used avidemux, so I'm not familiar with it.
However a little googling took me to this page
http://avidemux.org/admWiki/index.php?title=Cutting
"If you are editing a file with variable bitrate audio, run Audio->Build VBR Time Map before you do any editing. Otherwise your audio will be out of sync."
and your screenshots do show the audio to be VBR.
This assumes what you did was just simple cuts or merges (as opposed to encode it). You never mentioned whether the screenshots were of your source file, or the resulting file that's out of sync. 720x480 I was going to guess youtube, but it's only a guess.

Did you check CPU usage while playing the file?

I'm surprised VLC won't play the MP4. It's probably one of the better players for MP4 files. I guess the other player to try would be QuickTime Player, since it's the "official" player for MP4 files (the MP4 container was derived from Apple's own MOV container).

I'm equally surprised VirtualDub can open an MP4 file at all. Are you using either a filter or avisynth?

if all you're doing with your MP4 files is cut or merge them, try YAMB. it's really simple to use.

You could try a VideoCHarge Studio.

I have used it and haven't problem with video audio sync.
