Audio absent with MPG files in Sony Vegas (Vista)
hi,
I have a Sony Vaio (VGN-AW11M), with Windows Vista (Home Premium, SP2). I'm trying to edit some MPG self-made video, but the audio does not appear in the audio track when I drag the media onto the editing area. When I edit AVI or WMV files, everything works fine (both audio and video appear normally), but with MPG files made with my handycam it doesn't (though other MPG files do show the audio normally :-s ). I'm using Sony Vegas 6.0. The handycam used to make the initial video is also Sony (DCR-SR60), which only records in MPG format. Now, I have an older laptop (Packard Bell, with Windows XP), and when I edit the exact same MPG files in it, everything works fine, meaning, both audio and video appear correctly! It's running the exact same version of Sony Vegas (I installed from the same CD-ROM onto both computers). Any hint? thanks in advance! Andres Last edited by yamilandres; 09-15-2009 at 03:18 AM. |

Re: Audio absent with MPG files in Sony Vegas (Vista)
Use gspot to report what the audio codec is. I wonder if it might be AC3, and you don't have a filter for it. They can come bundled in codec packs, or you can get it from http://sourceforge.net/projects/ac3filter/

Re: Audio absent with MPG files in Sony Vegas (Vista)
hi blah789, thanks for your reply!
I used gspot to find out what the codec is, and it is indeed AC3filter, which I downloaded and installed (simply ran the .exe in it), it was quick and it seemed quite simple and straight forward. However, I still don't get the audio in the audio track of Sony Vegas (I even restarted my pc, but still nothing). Actually, some MPG files do show the audio track, and some others (the self-made ones) don't. And I must have had the AC3filter codec already installed, because one of the MPG files that do show the audio also uses it. I then conclude that the reason for my issue is one different that the lack of that specific codec. Any other idea? Again, thanks very much for your help! Andres |

Re: Audio absent with MPG files in Sony Vegas (Vista)
I researched this more closely and stumbled upon this page
http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/24/863332 It says you should update to version 6.0c or later. This page has the vegas 6.0d updates http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/...es/vegasfamily In the pdf manual on that same page, the only mention of AC-3 says "only available in the full version of the software", but I'm not sure if it's in reference to exporting or importing. |

Re: Audio absent with MPG files in Sony Vegas (Vista)
hi again, blah.. and thanks, this time I did get a solution as the audio finally appears in the editing field.
It was a bit weird though. To start, I never uninstalled the 6.0a version, it's still there. So, when I was installing the 6.0d version, at some point during the installation, the process "was finished prematurely"; the message also said that my system had not been changed. Now I have both versions installed, though I'm only using the 6.0a one, and if I uninstall the 6.0d one, I will get the same problem again: the audio won't show in the audio aditing track. Also, everytime I start the program, I get a message saying something like "Windows host rundll32 has stopped working". I simply ok it and everything seems to work fine. So now the question is: am I gonna get any trouble with this at any point? How can I solve this rundll32 issue? thanks one more time ;-) Andres |

Re: Audio absent with MPG files in Sony Vegas (Vista)
not sure about the rundll32 issue. you could look in the event viewer and see what causes the crash (it's probably in the application log). it might (or might not) mention another dll that causes the crash.
I'd write sony and ask if it's possible to install the 6.0d update without anything installed. Some programs like Nero let you do that (no prior installation needed - you just need the key), so the installation is clean and you don't run into the kind of problem you ran into. If it turns out it's possible and you don't have too much to lose (like settings or projects), uninstall everything, reboot, and install 6.0d only and put in the key. If it requires the original to be installed, I'd try installing 6.0d over it again. If it fails, (and there's not too much to lose as mentioned before), uninstall everything (old and new), reboot, install the original, reboot, install 6.0d. If all else fails, contact sony support. |
