Scanning Software

Hi everyone,
I used to scan using Photoshop and Vistascan. I've stopped playing around with design, and for practical reasons I'm using the GIMP and HP's provided software.

I'm trying to find a reasonable solution for some not-techy friends of mine for simple efficient scanning. I've tried using Picasa, but it can only scan one page at a time, and makes the whole process really cumbersome.

What software do you use?
What would you recommend for someone who doesn't know how to tweak everything up and wants his/her scanner to "just work"?

Thanks.
