DVD to avi or mpeg?

I got a hold of some concert footage of my band. It's on a dvd and I would like to convert the dvd to a avi file or mpeg so i can then upload it to youtube. Could someone please help me with this I would greatly appreciate any kind of help.

AVI is simply a container file, not the actual format itself. MPEG is commonly used for DVD and digital cable systems to compress the video. What you can rip it to depends on the codecs on your PC.

Unless the ripping program itself comes with a library of codecs.

Free. Functional. Never failed me yet.

One note: Only tried the Mac 10.4 and Linus releases. My windows testrun failed, but it may have been the dvd drive.
