problem downloading old tapes to PC

I have a sony digital 8 camcorder, and am running windows vista 64 bit.

I just downloaded one tape using windows built in video import feature, and chose the .avi option to save it. after the video downloaded, I played the file, but first thing that was weird is that it did not load up in windows media player, instead it was in windows picurtre viewer! also the video was like in fas forward somehow, even though when I downloaded it, it was on play just normal speed on the camcorder!

If you have Nero, try using it's import agent.

Can you save it in any other format, .wmv for example?
