Cant get audio in Vegas

Blah789, you were extremely helpful with my last problem, maybe you can shed some light on this one. I returned the JVC HD cam and got a different JVC that records its videos in .mod unlike the last one that used .mts. Now I cant get these video files audio to work in Vegas. The video plays fine. The videos play fine in the provided software and when I change the extension to .mpg they work in Windows media player with no problem. Now I didnt capture the video via Vegas because it doesnt see the camera via USB so I backed-up the video using the JVC software and then imported the media. So, is there a Vegas setting Im missing? Or will Vegas not accept .MOD file audio? Is there a way to import straight into Vegas using USB? I know the HD cam I had used the AVCHD and it imported fine. Oh, there is no option for Firewire with this cam either. Im using Vegas Movie Studio 9. Thanks in advance.

Cant get audio in Vegas

I cant get my audio to work in Vegas. The video plays fine. Ive just purchased a JVC Everio HDD camcorder (this is my second, the first was HD and my system wasnt powerful enough) and it creates .MOD files. Re: No smooth playback of video, help!

I'm not really knowledgeable with Sony Vegas, so I can't help you in that department (but someone else might).
What codec does the .mod files use? Check in VLC as mentioned before if in doubt. I suspect it's MPEG-2 video with AC-3 audio.
If audio is giving you trouble, give the AC3 filter a try (if audio is indeed AC-3 as I'm guessing). http://sourceforge.net/projects/ac3filter/

Re: No smooth playback of video, help!

I found this little tool on the web - it allows you to convert MOD to mpeg and also allows the correct aspect ratio info to be put in the header. I was having trouble with widescreen (16:9) footage coming into my editing software as 4:3 and having to manually "interpret footage" for each file to get it back to 16:9. This tool will batch convert whole folders or you can select individual files.
I now download all my MOD files to my computer hard drive, then batch convert them using this tool before importing them to edit in Premiere Elements 7. They come in without having to be conformed (as they are now mpegs) and resized.

From the Sony Vegas page:
"import AVI, DV, SWF, and MPEG 1 & MPEG 2 files" - nothing about MOD (though they are mpeg2) or for that matter Sony's proprietary file mt2
I had a trial of Vegas 8 on my comp and it handled the MOD files OK.

Re: Cant get audio in Vegas

Please don't double post leakej. I have begun to answer this enquiry in your other thread. I'll see if I can get a mod to bring the answers here and mark the other thread as solved. It makes it easier for staff and other posters to find and answer this particular enquiry if there is only one thread per issue.

Re: Cant get audio in Vegas

Sorry about the double post. I will give the conversion tool a go and the AV3 filter and let you know how it goes. Thanks for the reply.

Re: Cant get audio in Vegas

OK tried the AC3 filter, nothing. Tried the conversion tool and it converted to MPG and fixed the aspect ratio but still no audio. I updated the soundcard driver and my card specs say it accepts 44k sample rates but for some reason Vegas says my card doesnt. I get an error saying in Vegas saying my card doesnt support the current sample rate or bit depth. AHH, frustrating this file format is. Mini-DV may be in my future again.
