Editing Files from Video Camera DvD

Hey Guys!

I'm currently working on a group projct for my management 200 class. We've been volunteering at a Poor Assisted Living home for the past couple months (throwing events and such). On our last visit we took recorded some interviews with the residents and staff so when we present our project it gives a good idea of why we chose it.

We took the information and finalized it on the recorder. The actual dvd itself is able to play what recorded but I cannot get the files from the dvd into movie maker to edit. I'm not trying to make a fancy video for the presentation, but just clean it up and organize the information in a presentable form.

I tried looking into it myself but I just can't figure it out. When I go to the dvd, it says the files are .ace. I looked for an .ace converter to convert it to a .MPEG or .WMV but even the converter didn't read the files. I'm running low on ideas so I figured I would check with you guys.

Any ideas would be great, or even a solution!

Thanks Guys.

Re: Editing Files from Video Camera DvD

I'd never heard of the .ace file extension for videos. (I'd heard of it for archives - .ace files are much like .rar or .zip files, openable in winrar and winace).
I wonder if it's just a fancy extension for MPEG-2. JVC had this (very annoying) habit of naming their MPEG-2 files .MOD.
I think the handiest thing to do would be to feed the video file into gspot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot) avicodec (http://avicodec.duby.info) or mediainfo (http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net) and see what they say about the file.
If it turns out to be an MPEG-2 file (many camcorders record in that format), you can get a decoder from here http://sourceforge.net/projects/gplmpgdec
I'm surprised the camcorder didn't come with a decoder (most tend to come with editing software too). Also if you have DVD playback software, that'll play MPEG-2 files.
P.S: Are you able to play the file in Windows Media Player? Or what do you use to play it?
