Recording Audio Software

I want to make my own recordings on my computer. I need to have a good digital recording audio program and a fairly good microphone. Any suggestions in advance are always welcome.

sound forge is a program that i like. if you are going to mix these recordings together the same company makes a program called acid pro that makes you feel like a pro.
