HD Videos give bad fps

not sure where to ask this, hope this is the right place

if not please move it

================

when I try to 1080p videos on my computer, the result is usually a slideshow

it handles 720p just fine

I use VLC to play my movies but i get the same result with windows media

can someone tell me if this is due to a hardware deficit? is the processor or do i need more ram? are there any software tweaks I can make?

Hi, welcome to TSF

What CPU, RAM and graphics card do you have? Have you updated the graphics driver and DirectX?

Check in Task Manager during video playback to see your CPU and RAM values.

How much free hard drive space? Do you defrag regularly?

Are you watching the videos at the monitor's native resolution?

What are your output settings in VLC? I use Media Player Classic which allows you to change DirectShow settings to Overlay Mixer, VMR7/9, and 2D/3D surface render techniques to optimize performance. I don't know if VLC has similar settings, but it's very customisable, so there should be something you can change.

Full 1080p video can be rather harsh on some PCs, especially without extra hardware support from a video card.

Give Media Player Classic a shot and see if it helps at all. www.codecguide.com

Re: HD Videos give bad fps

this comp is a laptop:

athlon 64 x2 (can't remember the clock speed off the top of my head)
Radeon X1200 - i have the latest catalyst driver
1 GB ram
DX 10

I've tried all the different output settings and none of them seem to help any noticeable amount. I've also tried Media Player Classic.

The one thing I haven't done is try to run the video at the monitors native resolution. How do I do that? this screen is 1280x800

Re: HD Videos give bad fps

I don't know about VLC, but in MPC go to Options > Playback, enable 'Change fullscreen resolution' and set it to 1280x800 32bpp 60Hz. Or check the video's properties to see what resolution it was saved at, then make the appropriate changes in the media player to match the video's resolution.

Have you installed the AMD Dual Core Optimizer? This is to correct timing problems with dual core AMD CPUs. It might not be relevant to this problem, but it's advisable to install anyway.

I tried that, didn't help much if at all

I looked into the dual core optimizer but apparently it isn't available for vista yet

So anyways is my computer lacking in processing power or RAM (it seems like if i let the video run a few times and cache, it runs a little bit better)? I might build a new comp soon for watching nice videos and starcraft 2 and want to make sure this doesn't happen

A higher quality graphics card would help.
