Photo or Photoshop?

A very good friend of mine, David Harvey, did a photo shoot for a metal fabrication shop today.

I've attached one of the shots ... It may look photoshopped, but what you are seeing is 100% camera and lighting work.

Thought y'all would be interested ...

Re: Photo or Photoshop?

That's some clever lighting, but the background looks like its vertical strips that have been copy/pasted. You can see the vertical lines in the middle purple section.

Re: Photo or Photoshop?

The vertical marks are actually part of the steel plate.

The way Dave said he did this was to build a box behind the plate, then had a welder create the smoke. He used yellow gel on the strobes behind, and the red and blue on the spots for the face.

He said the biggest challenge was getting the smoke rolling enough to give it some texture.

Unfortunately, the plate is only 1/8" thick, so the depth doesn't come through on the cut-outs.

Re: Photo or Photoshop?

Nice work! He could achieve the same effect in Photoshop using a repeating pattern, light & cloud filters, and drop-shadowed text with a bevelled edge, but that's not as much fun as getting a welder in to mess about with real smoke.

I'd like to see him taking some existing images that were created digitally, from commercials or posters for example, and recreate them using manual techniques. Could be an interesting project for a website.
