Re: >= 3dsMax
lightwave is quite good. actually was rated better than max not so long ago. blender is free, but difficult i've read. i can post links to manuals for blender if you want to try it.
EDIT: maya has a full free version available.

Re: >= 3dsMax
maya always had the better name for 3d production. with a large set of tools in the box it had a better setup to do cinematics and animation. you had to buy plugins to make max as powerful, but was more commonly used for 3d gaming production. those boundaries are not so well defined anymore and maya and max are more equal in power. maya would probably still get a higher rating though.
cinema4d is quite good as well. i can give you links to websites that would specialise with training dvds for all of the major dcc applications going.

Re: >= 3dsMax
i don't know what kind of library maya comes with. but you could download the 30 free trial of max, that will come with some reasonable textures maps. well max 9 did, i cannot vouch for max 2008.

Re: >= 3dsMax
a top end dcc application for free is going to have some restrictions. that is why it's called Personal Learning Edition (PLE). lightwave or cinema4d would certainly be good options.

Re: >= 3dsMax
Daz also has a few programs that can deliver impressive results. www.daz3d.com has more and galleries of user images/animations.
Caligari Corporation makes the program TrueSpace which I started using at version 2. It's really grown into a stellar program but still has a little ways to go before it can compete with LightWave and 3DS MAX.. www.caligari.com for more.

I do my modeling in blender and i fined it rather easy to pick up (the game engine is alos easy but sucks i sugest exporting as directx and programming in that) a few of my frineds have tried blender about half of them like it and the other half can't figure out how to use it even with tutorials. i would definitly try blender before buying a program i for one love it (though as soon as i have enouph money for maya i am deleting blender) |
