Cinema 4d R10 using a Quad Core Q6600

Just wondering what rendering times I'm looking at. Can anybody ballpark how long it's gonna take for some decent renders? I'm supposed to use the macs they have in the computer lab, but I just put together a new comp with 2gb ram and a Q6600. I'm thinking maybe I can do some stuff in class but then hammer it all out at home. Teacher was saying it would take seconds to hours depending on what I made (currently they will just be still images). Just wondering what times anyone else has had or I can expect. Hoping to cut renders down to under an hour for most things.

Re: Cinema 4d R10 using a Quad Core Q6600

It depends on what settings you use in Cinema4D, the size of the image, number of lights/effects, render quality, what other programs are running in the background, etc. I would say an hour for a professional full-sized render is optimistic, but it's impossible to give an accurate figure with so many variables.

A friend of mine uses 3D Studio and a few other similar programs and his preview renders can take over an hour each, with the full-settings renders taking several hours.

The best thing to do is drop some of the more advanced render options and do a quick preview, then increase the settings until you find a suitable compromise between render time and image quality.

On the system I have listed under My System to the left I get renders ranging from seconds to hours based on various aspects. Complexity. texture, lighting, post, etc. All will affect the speed. Also, make sure that the software is written to USE multiple cores as opposed to being multi-core COMPATIBLE.
