Adobe Illustrator Catch 22

Hi, I have been playing with Graphics with my computer for a while now [Xara, BoomTown, etc] and as far as cross platforming goes Adode looks like the only way to go if I want to end up in Flash animation. I want to draw my own cartoons and see how far I can get. If I spend a lot of time drawing vector art in Xara, and then try to animate it in Flash, I am sure it will not be as good as doing the same as drawing it in Illustrator and then to Flash. That said I have been trying to buy the Students version from Adobe and getting nowhere. I have asked them by phone & email if they can tell me of an online course they recognize that qualifies me for the Academic version and they will not answer. I can buy the software anywhere if I can prove I am a student [at a third the price of the retail cost] but to use the program legally Adobe has to recognize it. I do not intent to use it in a business as yet as I really am only learning, so does anyone know how I can get started on this. Thanks for your time Graham.
