I don't think you can completely protect your pictures. When you send them to someone they can edit them however they like and still print, but adding a watermark puts an invisible copyright message or image into the picture that is very difficult to remove.

An addition to what Koaka said: protecting an image is very hard to do. It's the same for music. You can make it so that people cannot legally abuse your property, but that won't stop them from doing it. A watermark is basically the most powerful tool at your disposal, just don't expect it to stop everyone. (this has been your cynical message of the day, good luck!)

Another idea used by many stock image sites is to use both a combination of water-marks and a low-resolution version of the image. You are basically reducing the quality of the image to the extent that a legitimate user can fully appreciate what the image is, but at the same time not be able to use it in its current state. You can then provide them with the high-resolution version on purchase or whatever.
