My partner has lost some digital pictures.
She put the camera in the cradle, then insted of saving all pictures to computer, she decided to take one picture at a time and move from camera into a folder, the problem is that it required her to rename the photo as there was already a photo with this name, but instead of adding some additional letters or numbers to the name, she deleted the whole name including the .jpg symbol and renamed it, something like "john" without the jpg symbol, she said that it seem to save, but she cannot find it on the computer. The question is, will I be able to find the pictures as they dont seem to be jpgs, would they have saved anyway ? I have done a search for modified pictures for the day and even files modified, but with no results ? Please advise. Thanks

If she saved them to the same folder all the other photos are in, look in there. As they don't have a .jpg extension they might be hidden so enable "show hidden files and folders" in Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View tab.
Are the pictures still on the camera?

if you have a memory card reader or the camera appears as a drive when you connect it to the pc use this software to recover the images. you said she 'moved' them so i'm assuming that they were deleted?
so go here and download smart recovery as supposed to the file recovery. smart recovery deals in particular with graphic images and i've used it before with great success.if you did find them on the HD you can quickly rename their extensions using the command prompt, but you're not having any luck finding them still?

Hi I have tried the hidden folders, with no luck.
That would be to easy if the pictures were still on the camera, nice idea though. I tried the smart recovery, but couldnt work out what to do, I think she will have to just except they are gone, this is what happens when the other half thinks she knows what she is doing, I think she will leave the transfer of photos to me in the future. Thanks for you help anyway. |

the smart recovery has 3 settings which are basicly asking where to search, what graphic file type and where to save the recovered files.
i was hoping that when you connect your camera to the pc its given a drive letter. if so then you can select it as a drive to search. otherwise you'll need to use a memory card reader, which i've used before in the past. they are very cheap and generally read multiple card types. the second option is the graphic file type you are looking for and JPG is the most common format to retrieve. you mentioned above that these are the file types the camera uses. the third option is to select where to save the recovered photos. it's always advised not to write to the drive you are recovering from in case you write over files that have not been recovered yet. then hit start and let it go through the process.

I'm having a similar problem, (well my mum is) I can see her pics on her Kodak camera, but it won't transfer the files to the PC, I tried on her PC using the Kodak software and nothing, I've brought the card to my PC and tried my card reader and I can see lots of files, but it won't transfer them.
I've run smart recovery on it looking for jpgs and it's not found any files and have done it again looking for the kodak one's listed and nothing. Is there any way I can recover these at all? It's really annoying seeing them on the camera and not being able to get them off!!! thanks! |

Hi Bill,
I'm not sure what card you have, but the SD cards (and probably most others) have a little "lock" switch on them, so that data isn't accidentally deleted. This may also stop transfer of data to and from the card. Looking at the card (if it's an SD) from the front, the switch is a little light grey tab on the left. Down is locked, and up is unlocked . Try moving that switch up to the top. It may have just been knocked slightly at some point.. ![]() for a picture Cheers Liam
