Any good free software for recording video?

What I'm looking for is a program that literally records everything on my computer screen and turns it a video file such as an avi. For example: if I'm playing a video clip, it would capture the clip. I once had a similar program that stopped and started recording with the simple press of a hotkey.

The reason I want such a program is because I only want to capture a few minutes of a 60 minute DVD. Ideally I'd also like capture sound as well as video.

Thanks for any help!

Tried it and it wont record a playing video clip. Basically what I want to do is record the image and sound of a small part of a larger video clip so that I can upload it to youtube.

Depending on how your PC is setup to display video, you might be able to do this with Camtasia Studio or FRAPS. On the other hand, if you have the time and processing power you can rip the DVD content and then use a video editor to get just the parts you want.

Niether Camtasia studio or fraps worked. I wish I knew how to use a video editor :(

i don't think there is going to be simple answer to this. if it was as simple as capturing the screen as a dvd played then all the dvd copying would be done so. what you might need to do is rip the .vob file to the HD and then convert it to an AVI. then crop that AVI to the clip you want.

to rip the vob files you'd need a decryptor, something like clonecd or anydvd could do that. to convert to AVI would take time. i have used autogordianknot to do this in the past. then you could use windows movie maker to crop out the clip you need.

Thanks! I'm downloading autogordianknot right now. I'll leave my PC on overnight to convert to an avi and then use windows movie maker to cut out the clip I want.

The DVD says that it's a UDF file. Apparently autogordianknot doesn't deal with UDF files.
