Motor Racing (or Auto racing, if you want)

Anyone here interested?

My main passion is Formula One (Go Hamilton!), but I watch pretty much anything on four wheels, and some on two).
NASCAR is obviously popular in the US, but it's not at all popular in the UK or on mainland Europe. It does have a certain image problem I think.

In fact Formula One IS the most popular motor sport out there, and rightly so :D :D.

Re: Motor Racing (or Auto racing, if you want)

I used to like auto racing much more than I do today. I went to the USGP F1 race a couple of years a go and loved the pageantry but the race was simply a bore (and no, this was not the year one half didn't race because of tire issues). Hardly any passing and almost no close racing. That's where NASCAR has learned its lesson. Make all the cars equal, bunch them all up, and there'll be passing on every lap. My problem with NASCAR is there's no innovation - I think they still use carburetors!

Also I think there's too many rules. I enjoyed a motorcycle series many years ago for its simplicity - bring whatever you think gets you around the track fastest. Here's the entire rule book: The motorcycle shall have two wheels.

Rallying is fun to watch - from a far. I don't know if I'd stand on the side of the track as they careen out of control.

Re: Motor Racing (or Auto racing, if you want)

You make some good points. F1 CAN be boring (and I'm a huge fan), but I love the technology as well as the incredible handling. The rules have to be fairly complicated because the cars are so complicated. There are massive political problems though.
If you want close battles, then NASCAR is great (My favourite driver is Tony Stewart hehe). I think rally drivers are the best drivers in the world though. Tarmac, Ice, snow, gravel, sand, mud, they go fast on them all. It's mindboggling how fast they go sometimes on surfaces which would leave people like you and me floundering, or just not going anywhere. Yeah, they have specialist tyres etc, but even on tarmac they just fly (find some vids of Rally Ireland for a good example).

NASCAR stock cars haven't changed much since the 80's, requiring a far lower team budget than that of a formula one team, which needs to spend millions each year on new engines and cars just to remain competitive. and that's why you only see those big-name teams winning in F1. i love its fast handling and turning, though.

Look at the price of a F-1 car, its somewhere around 20x more than a NASCAR stock car. But im a fan ok Kimi Raikonen (sp) and for NASCAR i like Dale Earnhardt jr.

dale jr hasn't won a single championship, or a single race since 2006. i don't know why he's been the most popular driver for so long.
