Goodell determines Patriots spied on other teams

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has determined that the New England Patriots violated league rules Sunday when they videotaped defensive signals by the New York Jets' coaches, according to league sources.

Goodell is considering severe sanctions, including the possibility of docking the Patriots "multiple draft picks" because it is the competitive violation in the wake of a stern warning to all teams since he became commissioner, the sources said. The Patriots have been suspected in previous incidents.

The Jets supposedly knew about the Pats stealing the signals. Why then didn't they cross them up by giving a fake sign every now and then? Why not put an ear piece in the D captain's helmet and tell him what D to run? Why all the fuss about the Pat's gaining an advantage?

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick apologized today for videotaping New York Jets coaches during a National Football League game and explained that the case stemmed from his own interpretation of the league rules.

But the NFL circulated a memo last September warning of severe penalties for videotaping other teams' signals, so I'm not sure where he got confused...

What I don't understand is why the victory is allowed to stand? In all other sports, if you're caught cheating the win is taken away. Jockeys or auto racers get caught being 2 pounds under weight = disqualified.

Oh yeah, but then Las Vegas would have to give back the money and they ain't likely to do that willingly. Yet more proof that gamblers control the NFL.

(Here's more: why are the teams mandated to publish their injury list? If you're the coach wouldn't you keep secret the fact that your starting running back is hurt? That way your opponent has to prepare as if he's going to play (but instead you're actually going to be passing a lot) - that uncertainty is to your advantage. But no, the gamblers can't have that. It might skew the point spread.)

Just be honest with us. We'll still watch. After all we're all idiots.
