Protests Over Muhammad Cartoons Escalate

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip Feb 3, 2006 — Outrage over caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad escalated in the Arab and Islamic world Thursday, with Palestinian gunmen briefly kidnapping a German citizen and protesters in Pakistan chanting "death to France" and "death to Denmark." GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip Feb 3, 2006 — Outrage over caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad escalated in the Arab and Islamic world Thursday, with Palestinian gunmen briefly kidnapping a German citizen and protesters in Pakistan chanting "death to France" and "death to Denmark."
The protests spread to Indonesia on Friday, with Islamic hardliners barging into a building housing the Danish Embassy and burning the European country's flag. The Indonesian government had earlier condemned the drawings, as did Afghanistan.

In Iraq, Islamic leaders urged worshippers to stage demonstrations following weekly prayer services Friday. Iran summoned the Austrian ambassador, whose country holds the EU presidency.

The issue opened divisions among European Union governments. Austrian Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik said EU leaders have a responsibility to "clearly condemn" insults to any religion. But French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy said he preferred "an excess of caricature to an excess of censorship."

Sarkozy joined journalists in rallying around the editorial director of France Soir, who was fired by the newspaper's Egyptian owner. France Soir and several other newspapers across Europe reprinted the caricatures this week in a show of support for freedom of expression.

The cartoons were first published in September in a Danish newspaper, touching off anger among Muslims who knew about it. The issue reignited last week after Saudi Arabia recalled its ambassador to Denmark.

The Danish newspaper, Jyllands-Posten, had asked 40 cartoonists to draw images of the prophet. The purpose, its chief editor said, was "to examine whether people would succumb to self-censorship, as we have seen in other cases when it comes to Muslim issues."

Islamic law, based on clerics' interpretation of the Quran and the sayings of the prophet, forbids depictions of the Prophet Muhammad and other major religious figures even positive ones to prevent idolatry. Shiite Muslim clerics differ in that they allow images of their greatest saint, Ali, the prophet's son-in-law, though not Muhammad.

This was a really dumb thing to do. Not only is it driving fanatics fanatical, but the paper turned out to be owned by an Egyptian businessman . So now anyone responsible is getting fired: The cartoonist, the editor...

What's funny is CNN and NBC won't show the cartoons because it is insensitive to Muslims yet they will show this painting...

And they also air the show 'Book of Daniel' which makes a mockery out of Christianity. I say the Christians rush the studios of CNN and NBC with guns and start riots in the streets, and put out bounties on peoples heads, oh wait, we don't do that.

i might add this :

As long as those countries has religion governing the country ...it will be always the misunderstanting .
separate the religion from the power ...and things will get better ... but it is a long process ...because some countries (arabics or muslims) have an average of 35 to 40% illetrate under 50 years old .

it is a looooong process ........

Jesus isn't some dood, the guy who green lighted that show should be fired. Why you would make a show that would piss of so many people is beyond me.

Because Hollywood doesn't understand America. All they understand are the two coasts. If they understood America they would have jumped at the chance to do Mel Gibsons 'The Passion'. They didn't do it, that didn't stop Gibson and now he and his grandchildren are set for life while the entertainment industry wonders what the heck happened.

I think it's a good policy that the Muslims have, you can't depict Muhammad to arabs, black, or whites because you don't know how he looks, so no one can get hung up on that.

But some use the christian images of Jesus to discredit the church. One of the main arguments that christianity has been changed and altered through the ages is the depiction of Christ as a European.

Christians in protest of a painting of Jesus depicted as Osama Bin Laden became violent on Sunday when they set on fire the Puck Building in New York which is the home of the National Black Fine Art Show which the painting is displayed in.

Oh my bad, I seem to be getting my stories mixed up. Apparently nothing is happening at the Puck Building, while in Beirut on the other hand Muslim protesters set the Danish consulate on fire and in Damascus on Saturday they set the Danish and Norwigians embassy on fire all of this accuring because of the appalling cartoon images of the dead Mohammad.

While these radical muslims may be a minority, it seems to be a disturbingly large minority. What's even more disturbing is that there doesn't seem to be that many sain muslims condemning these acts of violence as well as the acts of violence by suicide bombers in general.

We MUST keep in mind that Islam is a religion of peace, and Muslims are keepers of the peace.

and to keep that peace, they suicide bomb, and burn buildings, behead their enemies, and people who help their enemies...seem like real peace keepers to me!

What amazes me almost as much as the radical islamic people, is the fact that almost no one knows about this. This is a serious problem, and of the 15-20 people I've asked about it, 1 had heard about it briefly and no one else had a clue what I was talking about. To me it's sad when so few people care about important global events...like 1.2 billion islamic people becoming enraged at a few satirical cartoons.

Making fun of Mohammed is as offensive to me as making fun of Christ or would be if somenone made fun of Buhdda. Muslims get in an uproar and elect governements that will not stand for this, and the media loves it. Christians elect Bush and we get villified by the media. The only way Christianity will get any love in this country, is if it ever becomes the minority.

You're missing the real point: for this to have had such a wide spread and violent reaction there has to be a very high level of pent-up anger in (at least a small portion of) the Muslim world against the West.

Were the Mullah's fanning the flames? Sure. But somewhere inside each rioter there has to be a motivating seed ready to germinate.

Or, maybe its just an excuse to blow up some things.

I suggest that some of the Islamic governments are orchestrating some of this. After all, these cartoons are a few months old.

Governments fanning the flames to drum up support for the war? Nah, I can't believe that at all. I mean, it's not like the U.S. has ever done that. *sarcasm*
