Illegal to Talk About Circumventing Copyright Protection?

Taken from PC magazine

Under the DMCA, it's illegal to break encryption or copy protection. It's illegal to offer a tool that breaks encryption or copy protection, or to publish source code that demonstrates how the encryption or copy protection is done. It's illegal to talk about how to circumvent copy protection. In your home, in your car, anywhere. Get the picture?

The anticircumvention provision, as it's called, is very broadly written, and it's widely reviled as one of the worst pieces of legislation in recent memory. It negates several centuries' worth of "fair use" law and practice, as they relate to copyrighted works. The ban on discussing the algorithms and techniques used for encryption and copy protection infringes on the First Amendment. Academics, computer scientists, and researchers have been sued, threatened with suits, and in one case arrested for exposing the weaknesses in some techniques and products. As you can imagine, this has had a chilling effect on the very people we depend on to develop better algorithms and products.

Yup. It's technically illegal to get rid of your Sony rootkit .

It was technically illegal for them to put it there in the first place

That is rediculous. You can't even talk about it?
I backup all my kids dvd's. It would get pretty expensive to have to buy the same movie three times. I have been backing up movies for about a year now. I have burned a couple that I don't own but I stopped doing that a long time ago. You should be allowed to backup the dvd's and cd's that you own.

It's pretty coincidental that I opened this thread as my burner is burning a backup copy of Baby Einstein just as I type this. They put to much crap on those dvd's anyways. It's nice to skip everything and get right to the movie which is exactly what my backups do.

I don't like the DMCA anymore because of this.

Where do they get off deciding that since they can't change fair use laws, they'll just make it paradoxically impossible to make fair use of your property?

especially since DVDs don't last nearly as long as VHS.

...and especially since my two year old thinks it's fun to take two dvd's (cd's) one under each hand and slide across the floor with them.
