Religion is why we don't have a clue

In another thread, our good friend bruiser posted an interesting article on the religous make up of the US compared to the rest of the world. Here's a quote:

Quote:
That's quite different from the world at large: Fifty-two percent of the world's population is non-Christian, compared to 4 percent in the United States; and one-third is Christian, compared to 83 percent in the United States.
Could this be a reason why we don't understand a lot of the world?

of course, the only thing those heathens understand is brute force, then conversion, and then maybe you can begin to get through to a few of em.

Well the United States has been at the forefront of medical, technological and scientific achievement. Yes a majority are christian, but a majority are non-practicing and most americans are secularists. This nation for the most part has drifted away from the staunch religionism (funny word I know) that was apparent in the 1950s. This nation has become more and more secular, with prayer being thrown out of schools and intelligent design BEING REJECTED! But that's another topic.

This may come as a surprise, but Christianity is the world's largest religion. Is it practiced the same by everyone everywhere? Obviously not, as there are so many denominations. However, it appears that every major religion has more than on denomination.

In Spain, 97-99% of Spain is catholic. But the nation is far more socially open then the US, allowing gay marriage and adoption for same sex couples. There is a difference between practicing and non-practicing, and moderate and crazed fundamentalist.

Take a step back: if you overlay regional religions and where we've fought mostl of the wars for the last 20 years a trend emerges that "Christian" countries are at war with non-Christians. Curious don't you think?

And where are the billion's of Chinese in that chart? Seems off to me but I'm no expert and it's too late to do any research tonight... Also, when was that data collected? My suspicion is that the non-Christian populations are growing at vastly faster rates than Christians. So if it's more than a couple of years old it's too out of date to be germaine.

My take - organized religion is the sourge of mankind. It exists only because it was a way for the peasantry to exert some kind of control over the ruling classes by threatening their very soul.

I feel that organized religion does more harm than good. It turns people into sheep - always waiting for some over-officious figure to tell you what to do and when instead of figuring it out yourself.

BAAAAA!!!

If you have a good shepherd, then the sheep are safe, happy, and healthy. If the shepherd manipulates things, then the sheep will be used and the other animals need to be wary.

I agree. Religion is helpful, until it's corrupted by power.

Did you guys see that? 40's and I agree on something!!!!!

And Joe is right about it being eerily similar to the government.

I wonder what exactly is meant by organized religion...

Catholic Church, a la the Pope sort of thing, or just any group of people believing the same thing gathering together?

How the North tower was demolished by pre-planted demolition charges and why the official 911 story is a lie

Sorry, didn't want to wander too far off the subject but...
