Hurricane Wilma

I heard on the radio pn my way in to the shop this morning, that an American tourist in Cancun was upset because she felt like the American governement abandoned her. I don't know if this is true or not, but it brings up an interesting discussion.

Firstly, once you leave the United States, you do so at your own peril. Every country has a different safety level. Mexcio is high on that list. Second, you are in the middle of a natural disaster in a foreign country, you should heed the warnings and orders of the local authorities. Thirdly, pay attention to hurricane season. You wouldn't go ice fishing on the arctic circle in winter without expecting cld and snow, why would you not be prepared for a hurricane in the Carribbean? Lastly, if I were in Cancun and the was an iminent threat of a hurricane, I would grab my passport and drive to the U.S. consulate in Merida and seek refuge there.

All in all, when you travel abroad, the governement can only do so much. The state dept. can list where you should and should not travel, issue you a passport and have embassies and consulates nearby for American affairs. But ultimately, you are responsible for yourself.

The thing to remember is that she's American and as such feels entitled to everything. If you leave the US during Tax season then you can get an extension for being out of the country. And while the gov't feels, at some level, responsible for its citizens it's still your own personal responsibility to think sensibly.

Another example of the public wanting the government to babysit us. Tell her to grow up and show some responsibility.
