Bringing Democracy to the World

Fact: 239 US soldiers have died in Afghanistan.

Today, this from Afghanistan: The Afghan government has arrested the publisher of a newspaper for writing about women’s rights and that it might be OK to leave Islam. The Government said his writing were against the Koran.

Question: What's our objective?
To catch Bin Laden? Failed.
To over-throw the Taliban? Succeeded (at least in some areas).
To install a democratic government? Doesn't look promising.

Well, to me it looked as though it was to restore trust in the Western world. We proudly went off to wage war on those who hate us, and to restore our pride. What we got was a load of dead soldiers, and a (falsely) restored sense of comfort.

Unfortunately, not everything can be solved with a bigger stick.

I believe I've identified the problem we're having in bringing democracy there: They have to WANT it. If people don't want something, then you can't even GIVE it away. Seems those in charge like things just the way they are.

Well the voter turn out when they held the election was better than what we get in the United States, and we don't risk our lives when we step up to that booth. Obviously the ones fighting us are against it, and you can't deny it isn't going very well, but I don't think you can say the people don't want it.

I can't say I'm an authority on what the people there think/know/feel, but why would you go vote when you've been threatened with death if you do, novelty?

Democracy is new to this part of the world. There is going to be growing pains. It took women and minorities 150 years to be equal in our own country. Some would argue that they still don't have the same rights, should we throw in the towel? These people actually got to vote. In the beginning of our history only people who owned property were allowed to vote.
Problems do not just disappear because you become a democracy. It's going to take years of hard work to make it work. I believe that it's worth the effort for the people of Afghanistan and for the rest of the free world. I just hope the people of Afghanistan have the spine of our forefathers because if they are like us now they are definitly doomed for failure.

We had to go into Afghanistan. It was one of the only moves this president made that I agree with.

They were harboring and supporting Bin Ladin, and we've wanted to get rid of them for a while now anyways.

Correction, the people who don't want democracy have guns and explosives. Most of the people who DO want democracy...don't. Personally, I consider this a problem. America had to fight for it's own independence from England. If we do it for them will it ever last? Or will there be a revolution as soon as we turn around?
