Hi Bry623,

I don't know much about her qualifications so will hold off on saying good or bad about this candidate. It is interesting that our friend the "swimming" senator would do that before she was niminated. It is also interesting that all his former friends were not swimmers for one reason or the other. Could it be that our friend the "swimming" senator predetermines his actions before things actually happen? See, I do know about his qualifications to be a senator. Oh well, I figured he would do that anyhow so it might as well be now for him to predetermine his actions.

The swimmer got the short list, or the actual info about the nomination, about 10 minutes after the decisions were made. The White House is and always will be a porous place, and much of that porosity is purposeful. The Exec branch tested the waters, and our amphibious Senator gave them his answer.

Philisophically, our new Chief Justice is really a replacement for Sandra Oconner, not Rehnquist. This will be "the mother of all battles", as this nomination will determine which side of the law the 5 - 4 court will swing to.

Ultimately, the exec branch will win, but it may not be with Harriet, as she is an insider.

Look for Gonzales to be the third nomination, if there is a 3rd. By that time, we will look less conservative than he does now, (in comparison to other nominees of members of the short list), and the first Hispanic on the Supreme Court will be a hard act to folow.

This nomination has got me to question whether or not I'm a republican anymore. The republicans don't seem much different to me than democrats like Lieberman and Gebhardt. I've began to question the party awhile ago. They can't seem to say no to new projects and bigger projects. It's especially bad here in Wisconsin where they have completely forgotten about the tax payers. We call then RINO's. Republicans In Name Only. It seems that the RINO's are over taking the party. At a time when they control every branch of government this is very disturbing.

Well the party names sort of change hands over the years. Repubs today are closer to what demo's use to be than today's demos are.

oh well maybe one she friends with bush and that basically all you need in order to get a important job in this country during the last 5 years.

She has never been a judge. She was a lawyer a very very long time ago. She was head of the lottery or some other unimportant position back in Texas when bush govern there.

From what I can tell she was the most qualify person within 30feet of bush office and he did not feel like looking further.

If you don’t believe me just look at all the republicans that saying the exact same thing about her qualification (properly with out all the sarcasm am using ).

You have to be
1) Living
and
2) Sane

No real requirements that the constitution puts forth for being a justice, but there are some things that you need if you ever want to stand a chance of being even nominated.

Did you hear his press conference on it? He basically said electing a non-judge might just be crazy enough to work

I was looking into the republican thing for a good year too, but I ended up determining that they're full of as much crap as the Dems.

They talk a big game but when the sh*t hits the fan the only guy they're really looking out for is big business.

The only hook they got is morals, and their need to legislate them.

I mean I don't believe in gay marriage and abortion but I don't think it's my right to legislate that on others. It may e my duty to inform others why those things are wrong but making those religiously rooted beliefs into law brings us one step closer to the Taliban.

I think that Bush knows she isn't going to make it through, so that way he can put someone up who has a record to answer some questions.

you give his ego too little credit. He's a rich boy, rich boys are use to getting what they want, and he wants her and he doesn't care what anyone else thinks about it (to a point).

I have an uncle who served three terms as a municiple court judge. I asked him what's the most important trait for a judge? Knowledge of the law? Compasion? Objectivity? Detachment?

His answer: "Judgement".

She is probably a very nice person. She probably knows the law. We know she's a evangelical Christian (why is that important for her when discussion of religous beliefs was verboten for Roberts?). We know she's loyal. We know she was a city council member. Etc...

But, we don't know anything about her judgement.

Because she has no decisions to review, the only way to assess that is to ask how she would rule in certian instances. Roberts was probably coached to not respond to these questions and Miers is likely to follow the same tact. So, we'll not gain any insites into her ability to judge.

when you put it that way this choice looks even worse. you don't know how she will act when the ball is in her court. Will she stick strictly to the law? will she be swayed by sypathy?

Bush said he would only nominate justices that would only interpret the constitution so you'd think he stuck to his word.

she obviously has a lot of will power to have influenced the president the way she did, I'm just wondering if she's trying to bite off more than she can chew.
