In a historic 5-4 ruling, the justices say the 2nd Amendment

protects individuals' right to bear arms.

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la...,4515047.story

WASHINGTON -- The Supreme Court on Thursday ruled for the first time that the 2nd Amendment explicitly protects Americans' right to own guns for self-defense -- resolving one of the Constitution's oldest disputes and reviving the debate over gun rights, crime and violence.

The landmark decision struck down a District of Columbia ordinance, the strictest in the nation, that barred homeowners from keeping handguns. The ruling brought immediate court challenges to similar laws in Chicago and San Francisco.

I don't think this decision surprised anyone. I've said it before, but my experience working in D.C. pretty much assured me that anyone who wanted a gun already had one. The Court was careful to say that restrictions on ownership are still valid. In the end, I don't believe this ruling will make much change in the gun ownership/registration landscape nationwide.

Where's all the clamor about legislating from the bench? I guess that only applies when those damn liberal judges do it.

its interesting what the supreme court did not say. They did not say hobbiest had the right to keep hundreds of guns or certain types of guns. All they said is we have the right to own guns for self defense and hunting. IMO, it means limitations can be set restricting the ownership of certain types of guns and they can set any rules they want as long as citizens are able to own at least one gun.

Sad that 4 judges don't know a thing about the constitution or history. This should have been the biggest no-brainer in SCOTUS history.

Ah but they DID say that the DC handgun ban law was unconstitutional.
