Armed America: Portraits of Gun Owners in Their Homes

Kyle Cassidy traveled 15,000 miles over two years photographing Americans in their homes and asking one question: “Why do you own a gun?” A good question, particularly since most of these guns are not easily reconcilable with the notion of self-defence and their true place should be somewhere in the Armed Forces. All the photo were later compiled in the book with its German edition being published this year. The pics below are taken from the latter. As said by Alan Cooperman from The Washington Post: “Each picture in Armed America could be a pro-gun advertisement - or an anti-gun poster. That’s what makes the book so riveting.”

Re: Armed America: Portraits of Gun Owners in Their Homes

Food for thought: To Kyle Cassidy and anybody else so ignorant to ignore the lessons of history in answer to the question of why the 2'nd amendment and the RIGHT of every law-abiding human to OWN ANY weapon including those in common issue to an individual soldier. Ponder the following:
1. WHAT COUNTRY HAS in recent times (something like the last 200+ years) has *NEVER* been invaded much less conquered despite being surrounded by agressors and occupied/conquered countries?

2. WHO is famous/infamous for the following QUOTE:
"This year will go down in history. For the first time a civilized nation has full gun registration. Out streets will be safer, our police more efficient, and the world will follow our lead into the future" ?

Any ideas:

1. Switzerland. A country where EVERY male age 18 to 45 or so IS REQUIRED to be a member of the Military and EVERY household stores the FULL OPERATIONAL KIT, including ammunition and firearm of the current Swiss Army.

2. Adoph Hitler, in 1935.... And we all know just HOW EFFECTIVE his gun control was in terms of a key enabler to the slaughter of more than 9 million or more people.

In all of history. banning ownership, whisky (prohibition), etc only may criminals out of the majority of otherwise law-abiding citizens and VERY RICH criminals. Or as we saw in 1935, a despot who came damn near to accomplishing his very public goals.. All but for luck and a couple of key mistakes, we may very well all be speaking German.

Re: Armed America: Portraits of Gun Owners in Their Homes

When you have a collector it is correct to say 'most' guns are not easily reconcilable for the notion of self defense. But I'll bet you all a shiney new nickle (a girl one named Philip) that they all have at least one gun that is easy and accessable for defense of home and limb.

I think this book is going to portray it all in a negative light unfortunatly... but atleast smart people can see that everyone holding a weapon in the pictures shown on that websight shows not a single finger on a trigger.

Re: Armed America: Portraits of Gun Owners in Their Homes

I do not own a gun. In fact the only gun I ever fired was an m16 when I was in the military. I was so bad, even though every shot hit a target, unfortunately the targets were not mine.

However, I am not opposed to guns. In fact I think some of the gun laws are down right stupid. I mean, they want you to keep your gun unloaded, with a trigger locked, locked inside of a box, with all ammo kept in another location. How can you protect yourself and your family?

Every time something happens that involves guns, the anti gun people yell for more laws, well, in most cases, numerous gun laws were already broken and the guns used were already illegal. So what good would more laws make?

I a not sure about this book and depending how it is put forth to the public it could promote either cause.

Re: Armed America: Portraits of Gun Owners in Their Homes

as I've said before, guns are great 'equalizers'....they make somebody like me, 130lbs dripping wet, the 'equal' of a 250lb thug....

in the big picture, criminals will most always have sources for guns, leaving only the law abiding citizen unarmed...now how fair is that?

to the idiots who like saying 'guns kill people'...well I guess then that pencils are responsible for misspelling?

Re: Armed America: Portraits of Gun Owners in Their Homes

Nice photos of the gun owners, but they are posed and don't really say anything about the subjects that is meaningful. We don't even know how many of these guns are operational. It's just sensationalist BS.

Then of course we have carr_e, who maintains that individual gun ownership will keep you free. News flash buddy, weapons alone don't cut it. Even in the days when the village blacksmith and the local carpenter could supply spears and shields to all comers, that was seldom enough to beat a professional army. Before you sound off about guerrilla or asymmetrical warfare, these tactics haven't generally been effective against an opponent who is sufficiently brutal and determined, though of course there are exceptions.

One thing I'm sure about is that the really dangerous gun owners; organized crime, cheap street thugs, and others who own illegal weapons definitely aren't in these photos.
