Candidates

Is it just me, or do all the '08 presidential candidates suck? I know we don't have a Dem. frontrunner yet, but neither on of them is appealing. I have a history of voting Republican and am a registered one. I tend to be a moderate conservative. I was in the military and I hate McCain's platform on Iraq. He wants to send 100,000 more troops to Iraq over a ten year period! The ones there now are on their third and even fourth tours. I am extremely unimpressed with Obama's take on issues as well. And Hillary... I don't need to start on her. I'm not pleased by the turn of events. I'm not sure if I will vote this year.

Re: Candidates

I too am unimpressed. I probably wont vote either. Sad day when we
cannot come up with a viable candidate to run for president. Im npa,
but tend to lean to the democrat side, but vote for what I and who
I feel is right for the job. No matter who is going to get elected
remember this, we will not leave iraq any time soon, that quagmire
will be another south korea, germany, turkey, take your pick. We
must stay to guard the oil fields. The weapons of mass destruction
excuse doesnt fly any more., nor does the fighting for iraqi freedom,
nor does the war on terror, or the hunt for Osama, yes Osama the
guy respondsible for 911, not Saddam Hussien or iraq. Its always been
about the oil, for which us as common Americans dont gain one iota
from...we just die for it.
Vote for none of above in 2009!

If you don't vote, you can't complain... so write your name, or a parents or friends name down for president...

Re: Candidates

Let's not forget all the other parts of the process that make up politics. It isn't just about voting; it's about being willing to invest time, effort, and even money to support your beliefs, and to help elect people who advance your interests. Like anything else worth having, you have to work to get good candidates and get them elected.

Rodomantade & Manic, if you can't even get involved enough to vote, I know you didn't spend any time in the trenches. In my county, 16.04 % of voters are registered Democrats, 83.67% are Republicans, and 0.29% are independents. So it isn't like trying to support the Democratic Party around here isn't tough most of the time, but I do it because it matters to me. If you think all the current candidates suck, I'd say that perception is just a reflection of your attitudes.

Hey Chode, at least (I don't know what country you are from) your country got it right with how they are registered.

Now, don't get serious on me, I was only kidding!

I'm up in the Texas Panhandle where people are outnumbered by cattle and oil wells both. In fact, wind turbines are coming up fast on the outside and may pass humans in a few years.

Re: Candidates

Cant get involved, dont assume that, Ive been voting for over 30yrs.
I do invest time, but for what, if you think these candidates are of
my choosing you are wrong. There the best money can buy I suppose.

Re: Candidates

We are also blessed with a very strong fundamentalist, mostly Baptist religious community. And right along with all these good old conservative values, we have one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the state and the highest rate of mothers who smoke throughout their pregnancy in the entire state.

Re: Candidates

Chode,

Well, guess we will have to try McCain.

You sent us your best (Bush & Bush), and now we need to try the rest.

That's a nice thing to say, but if none of the candidates proposed by the majority of people represent you then your vote is useless anyway. Are you suggesting the minority has no right to question their government?

Actually, the depressing thing about all this is that Bush wasn't a terrible Governor. He was failry moderate, and worked well with many Democrats as well as Republicans. However, during his run for the Presidency, he moved to the right a bunch, and has been very, very faithful to that wing of the party. The sad thing is that McCain seems to be doing the same.

And, BTW, LBJ was our best.

Re: Candidates

Certainly. A monumental piece of bad judgment thinking that he could muster support for the war by lying to America, and a lesson to all later politicians that the real interests of the nation are never furthered by falsehoods and distortions, particularly where the lives of U.S. servicemen are at risk.

But, realizing that his policy in Vietnam was a failure, he subsequently declined to run for a second term and began the process of extricating America from Vietnam. He also championed the Civil Rights movement even though he was well aware of how this would damage the Democratic Party's support in the South and among conservative Americans.
