Bashing the Bishop

(I love some of the creative headlines of UK newspapers!)

Its slightly old news now, but last week the Archbishop of Canterbury gave a talk on how religions interface with the law. Part of his thinking was that it was desirable for aspects of Islamic law to be incorporated into or at least accepted by UK law.
A huge media backlash occurred.
The Archbishop then needed to apologise for any miscommunication, even though I can't think of a person who is more cautious about the words he uses!

My System

Re: Bashing the Bishop

When my brother graduated from law school, I gave him a book titled "The Law Givers". The author had chapters on many of the historical persons/events that shaped our modern view of law. I recall that Mohammad had a whole chapter. So its perfectly logical to include aspects of what he preached into the discourse. The problem is: the public are idiots. All they know about Islamic law is that women are subservient and that violence is the answer. Or other such generalities, presumptions, out-right falsehoods heard over the last few years concerning the "radical Muslim terrorists". I have not studied the beliefs or philosophy of Mohammad but at least I know and admit that I haven't. Are there certain aspects of this religious philosophy that cold improve our modern condition? I don't know. But I'd certainly be willing to hear that side of the discussion. I'm afraid the times when learned men could discuss these issues openly and without prejudice are long past (if they ever truly were present?).
