Those of us fighting there were almost all draftees. We were poorly trained and motivated, generally poorly led, and after a while, responding to brutal violence in the same coin tended to become the norm.

At various times during the war, provincial governors offered "ear bounties" for dead Vietcong. During some court martial proceedings brought against U.S. officers, witnesses alleged that the accused had offered private bounties. I never saw that, but the South Vietnamese bounties were real. For a while necklaces of human ears were very much en vogue.
Well phrased, Chode.
What I meant is that the US could unleash all its military might and wipe out North Vietnam, which would mean that we HAD WON that war. However, that would not have resulted in a safer US or a better world! That is what I referred to by saying that there is nothing to win in Iraq even if we "win" the war.
You are absolutely correct when asking Iraq war supporters to define victory there just to demonstrate how difficult such definition is and how difficult it is for the US army.

Well, there you are. I'm a stupid Democrat, which I define a being at least 10 times smarter than the most brilliant NeoCon Republican that ever drew breath. When someone told him to breathe.

Re: Romney Quits Race

mikeber, the U.S. wasn't ready to deal with the consequences of an all out assault on North Vietnam. That would have just brought in the Chinese, and, ultimately increased Russian support. The bottom line was that we had too much to risk for too little gain.

Re: Romney Quits Race

Well, once again I'm waiting for any of you Bushies to define "victory" in Iraq. The first time I challenged you to define victory, I set a 25 word limit. No takers. At 50 words, only English Paul contributed a plan.

Fine. Need 500 words to define Wubbya's failed policies; OK, I don't mind being a bit more liberal.

"Death to all radical Muslims." Not a good tag line for the Bush camp, Drew!

Happy Chode?
It's kind of hard to do that from Iraq. Imagine if we only fought WWII from Italy.

Re: Romney Quits Race

But in WW2 it was fought in stages from island hoping in the Pacific to fighting in North Africa, then to Sicily, to Italy, to France and then Germany... so look at it that way... first Afgahnistan, then to Iraq, then possibly further from that... the only difference (and a mistake even I don't like that happened) is that we havn't finished Afgahnistan first like the other campains in the dub dub 2

It is better to quit the race, than to fall over your shoelaces.

Yes, I am drew. Since you didn't elaborate, I hope you'll pardon me if I do a bit of interpretation here, but you seem to be saying that all we have to do to "win" in Iraq is to kill every Islamic extremist on the planet. And, I'd have to say that's pretty much the way I view Wubbya's policy.

I think it is an absolutely unworkable policy, but I'd say you've correctly articulated the Administration's definition of "victory".

Re: Romney Quits Race

Bry, I'm sorry (but not very) for yet another off topic post. I think Romney showed the same practical spirit that made him a good Governor, by backing McCain and trying to help unite what has become a very divided party. While The Formerly Drug Addicted Rush Limbaugh and other pundits of the ultra-right gag at a McCain nomination, he's really the only candidate the Republicans can field that has the proverbial snowball's chance of winning. Of course, a Republican Presidential candidate needs a Vice-Presidential candidate.

Could an ex-president subsequently hold office of vice president?
