I'm not so sure that predestination is as written off as you think.
I was being flippant, but to someone looking in at Christianity, what I said is a broad caricature of what they would expect. After all, an all powerful loving God who prevents Himself from stopping acts of hate takes quite some explaining away.
I don't know if I cluttered the landscape, or just departed from common dogma. Either way the Church has to explain how God will 'save you' and yet makes no effort to save or protect people in a church from a gunman.

Grasping at straws... having gaurds at the gate is a deterent, to keep people who know they don't belong at the installation to not come in... unfortunatly that principle wont float well if you have a fenced area around a church gathering with armed gaurds patroling the area (jones town anyone?)

how would that look on the news... and many people that are calling far armed roving security would have been decrying the church saying its unnecessary and smacks of cultism... they played off of bad publicity (which religion REALLY doesn't need atm) to perhaps a couple people dead to include the murder and a heroic gaurd saving everyone else.

Grasping at straws my shaggy behind! Since there was a known threat, how would it have been inappropriate to check people entering the church for weapons? Do you really think no one would have understood the reason? Why was it better to put armed guards inside and hope no bullets went wild? Nothing about this issue reflected well in the press.

Why do you say religion doesn't need bad publicity? Isn't any perceived threat against religion the very breath of life to all to many pulpit-pounders? Let's say the shoot-out turned out badly and a few congregation members were killed or wounded. Could be some dynamite sermons in the making.

Sorry, I just see the church's "security measures" as poorly planned and put in place for a scenario that that wasn't expected to happen. Still, it can be better to be lucky than good.
