Happy Holidays?

Personally when some one says Happy Holidays to me I always ask "which Holiday?"

Christmas and/or Hanukkah and/or New Years

When someone says "have a good day" do you ask if they mean the 3rd or the 5th?

Not at all, since good day is a generic term and anyone with common sense can discern the difference.

Re: Happy Holidays?

If you know they're Christian then merry Christmas away, but these days there are a lot of atheist and non-Christians out there (especially when you're talking to someone in a college setting) so I say happy holidays and assume the person can figure it out.

Some times I will racially profile however. If I see the person is black and doesn't have a bow tie I'll say merry Christmas. Or if they're white and have a Ron Paul shirt on I'll assume they're an atheist and give em the holiday line.

Re: Happy Holidays?

Well at work we have 4 trees up. A christmas tree, and Hannuka bush, a Kwanza brush, and a holiday stick. We like to keep our options covered.

Re: Happy Holidays?

Personally, a "Happy Holidays" to me usually elicits a big grin and a "Merry Christmas". I'm not embarrassed to be a Christian. I hope others take the greeting in the spirit it's meant. If not, too bad.

With my Jewish friends, it's a tossup as to whether we say "Happy Hanukkah" or "Merry Christmas" to each other. If we weren't comfortable with our religious differences, we wouldn't be friends.

Re: Happy Holidays?

You could leave up the sign 'happy holidays' all year round, as someone is bound to have a holiday at any given time. If a break is because of Christmas, then it is the Christmas break regardless of whether you will be celebrating it, or whether you agree with the meaning.
If you have a day off to celebrate the Queen's birthday (which most people don't) then it is still the Queens birthday break, even if you are a foreign national and have no interest in the Queen.
I can't see how people are offended by the name of a holiday, unless it is something you actively oppose. I could see people being offended by a Bin Ladin holiday and the statement "Happy Bin day", but not "Happy Christmas".
I'm not a big fan of Halloween, but I would not be offended by someone saying happy halloween to me, and I would also think of saying it to someone dressed up like a witch (at halloween!).

Re: Happy Holidays?

Jews, Muslims atheists and other minorities need to step back from the whole "anti-christmas" thing. It's christian tolerance that allows them to practice their faith here, and the least they could do is respect their host.

Re: Happy Holidays?

Before Christmas Day, I give a Happy Holidays.
On Christmas Day, it's Merry Christmas.
After Christmas Day, it's back to Happy Holidays.

For me it has nothing to with what others believe, it's simply easier to say "Happy Holidays" than "Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year".

Re: Happy Holidays?

I guess we need to issue the following these days.

Best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non-addictive, gender neutral, winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most joyous traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, but with respect for the religious persuasion of others who choose to practice their own religion as well as those who choose not to practice a religion at all;

Additionally,
a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling, and medically uncomplicated recognition of the generally accepted calendar year 2007, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions have helped make our society great, without regard to the race, creed, color, religious, or sexual preferences of the wishes.

(Disclaimer: This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for her/himself or others and no responsibility for any unintended emotional stress these greetings may bring to those not caught up in the holiday spirit.)

or:

From us ("the wishor") to you ("hereinafter called the wishee") Please accept without obligation, implied or implicit, our best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, politically correct, low stress, non-addictive, gender neutral, celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasions and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all

... and a financially successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2001, but with due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures or sects whose contributions to society have helped make America great, (not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country or is the only "AMERICA" in the western hemisphere), and having regard to the race, creed, colour, age, physical ability, religious faith, choice of computer platform or dietary preference of the wishee.

By accepting this greeting you are bound by these terms that-

This greeting is subject to further clarification or withdrawal
This greeting is freely transferable provided that no alteration shall be made to the original greeting and that the proprietary rights of the wishor are acknowledged.
This greeting implies no promise by the wishor to actually implement any of the wishes.
This greeting may not be enforceable in certain jurisdictions and/or the restrictions herein may not be binding upon certain wishees in certain jurisdictions and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wishor.
This greeting is warranted to perform as reasonably may be expected within the usual application of good tidings, for a period of one year or until the issuance of a subsequent holiday greeting, whichever comes first.

The wishor warrants this greeting only for the limited replacement of this wish or issuance of a new wish at the sole discretion of the wishor
Any references in this greeting to "the Lord", "Father Christmas", "Our Saviour", or any other festive figures, whether actual or fictitious, dead or alive, shall not imply any endorsement by or from them in respect of this greeting, and all proprietary rights in any referenced third party names and images are hereby acknowledged.

But whatever: have a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
