Who Killed the Electric Car?

You guys really ought to take a look at this documentary. Ever wonder why your gas prices are so high? Why we have cell phones that can do anything under the sun and are changing every day but our cars are pretty much the same old same old they were 50 years ago?

This movie explains what happened to a perfectly functioning car called the EV1 that GM produced years ago. It details how eventually GM and other car manufacturers covered up this great asset to the every-day person.

For example instead of selling these cars...GM merely rented them to comply only long enough with goverment standards so that they could turn around and with the Bush Administration sue the board of California Air Resources Board.

They claim that the electric cars are not efficient or practical because when they had started producing them they only got around 90 miles per charge. However a using newer technology they were able to keep a car going 75mph on one charge for 300 Miles.

Ever wonder why it gas prices started to climb right when Bush was put in as President? Or why Hydrogen cars STILL are not on the market?

I really recommend this film, it is a real eye opener. You'd be amazed at how low some people stoop for money.

I liked the film because it was not based on half-facts. There are many images presented to prove what they are saying. It even shows GM destroying brand new electric cars after California repealed a command to have 10% of all cars 0 emission cars.

/agree

Doesn't surprise me at all that oil companies have surpressed this technology. It's sickening, and needs to be dealt with by a congress and an administration that doesn't keep looking the other way like they have been for the last several decades.
And "bio fuels" only replace one problem with another.

IMO, nuclear fusion power and electric cars will solve many of humanities problems.

One reason they killed the electric car and went with the hybrids is because without gas we are no longer addicted to oil. Which means they don't make money.

California built charging stations that ran off of Solar Power where you could recharge your electric car.

Car manufacturers complained that the batteries were not advanced enough to be reliable as a gas engine. ... Guess what? GM bought the battery company working on these advances....and sold it to a gas company....fun stuff :P

Re: Who Killed the Electric Car?

I think what we need to do is play hard ball to win. We need to grab the oil companies, and car compaines by the balls and save you will comply with our demands or you will not do business in America.

And considering America makes a large portion of their business, they will comply. If they don't comply issue a mandate demanding that their business is illegal and to be shut down since they do not follow regulation.

Also I am going to a international debate conference is Russia with students form Germany, America, Sweden, Norway, The Urkaine, and England within the month. I am on the energy secuirty council and will be presenting this at this debate. A lot of the poeple I am presenting this to are upper class individuals with resources, could only hope it sparks an idea.

Re: Who Killed the Electric Car?

the question is, are electric cars really environmentally friendly? It would take a lot more coal burning power plants to charge the cars if everyone went to them. There would be a lot more lead and acid that needs to be disposed of when the batteries are replaced. In reality we are just replacing one problem with another.

Re: Who Killed the Electric Car?

I believe electric cars are a great short term solution. I believe that the truly great solution is a trule hyrdogen car. Problem being technology simply needs more time to mature for those to work properly.

I believe that electric cars are something that we can do today, to even furthur profit and advanced oursevles.

Also solar pannels, didn't you see that towards the end. You don't even need to burn fuel to charge those cars, use solar pannels which can charge the cars and not even cost you a dime (after insallation and intial cost that is)

Re: Who Killed the Electric Car?

Although there are working Hydrogen cars out there in the world, they are way too dangerous to be on the market. Also, when it comes down to it, because of the cost of solar panels, energy from solar power plants is more expensive then that of a traditional coal or oil burning plant.

Re: Who Killed the Electric Car?

NTM they say that on average the electric car would waste about .60 worth of fossil fuels for power production per mile driven.

In Utah (where I live) most energy is produced by Natural Gas power plants and Hydro Electric Dams so most of it is not a huge pollution factor.

Re: Who Killed the Electric Car?

I had a truck powered by propane once... it was real clean and the tank would take me 500 miles before I needed to refuel. Off-topic somewhat but oh well.

Re: Who Killed the Electric Car?

I saw this documentary and thought it was very interesting. I think the oil companies need to be stopped. They're getting greedy and we as consumers have to pay the price, while they're out bribing congressmen under the table. We have the technology to become free of oil, but we aren't using it because of the link between oil companies, car makers and congress. I don't care if electricity or some other fuel takes over, as long as we become dependent on a source of fuel that we don't have to rely on importation to get and is energy/cost efficient.

Re: Who Killed the Electric Car?

I saw a link on the net that talks about a new type of Battery that has come out or will be out in 2008 that is supposed to put Lithium Ion batteries to shame. A battery strong enough to power a car for 500 miles weighs only 100 pounds :|
