Stolen Justice ?!

Quote:
The system failed Bobby Herrera.

Herrera pleaded guilty to assault for a shooting he did not commit, buckling to pressure from an incompetent lawyer who bled his family for thousands of dollars but never investigated the case. Even after the key witness admitted she falsely accused him, indifferent state appellate court justices let his five-year prison sentence stand without explanation.

My System

Re: Stolen Justice ?!

I have no confidence on our judicial system. Instead of putting criminals behind bars, it's more of a contest. A criminal can go free if his lawyer is a better contestant. As an innocent person can go to jail if a prosecuter pushes hard enough.

Re: Stolen Justice ?!

Ok guys , i don't understand this :

Quote:
I am a 14-year-old black freshman who shoved a hall monitor at Paris High School in a dispute over entering the building before the school day had officially begun and was sentenced to 7 years in prison. I have no prior arrest record, and the hall monitor--a 58-year-old teacher's aide--was not seriously injured. I was tried in March 2006 in the town's juvenile court, convicted of "assault on a public servant" and sentenced by Lamar County Judge Chuck Superville to prison for up to 7 years, until I turn 21. Just three months earlier, Superville sentenced a 14-year-old white girl, convicted of arson for burning down her family's house, to probation.

Whats up with this ?

7 years ! oh , common !
how about 1 or 2 years in prison for a first time offense ? why 7 ?

Re: Stolen Justice ?!

No, I don't understand it either, but I'm not familiar with the cases in question. Much of what goes on in a trial isn't reported, and this is especially true in juvie cases.

Quick case in point, many years ago a female high school student was shot and killed around 11th and Zaragosa in Austin, TX. At 2:00 A.M. on a Friday (maybe Saturday) night. The girl was popular, well liked by her teachers, had good grades; so no-one understood how she could be a target of this kind of senseless, random violence. Her parents blamed the City, because of the lack of recreational centers for teens in the neighborhood. So said the press.

Back then, East 11th was nothing but a string of bars, drug dealers, and hookers. I had to go there on business all too often, and in the middle of the day I'd stop at a light and have hookers open my car door and proposition me. You know it's a really nice area when a customer attacks you with a knife for trying to collect a bill.

My girlfriend at the time was a physical therapist who had been treating the girl for burns on her upper chest suffered while using gasoline as a solvent. Part of the therapy was using a protein digester to remove scabs and help reduce scarring. It hurt. During the procedure my lady had to listen to remarks like, "**** you, you white *****! I'm going to ******* kill you, you ****!" In between death threats the therapist remarked on the lovely gold rings the kid wore on every finger. "So," she said, "how did you get those?"

The reply was, "My boyfriend got them for me. He works at McDonalds."

It can be really hard to sort the wheat from the chaff.
