I never thought about that, when the people relies upon its government, and they can't afford to take care of immigrants... wammo!

But according to dems, socialism would work here... but nowhere else...

Come to think of it, the dems aren't very good at looking at history when they do actually come up with something original.

Social programs helped us out of the depression, they have their uses in certain situations, but when it comes to broad programs I side with the... libertarians.

I was almost forced to agree with the republicans for a second there (which may have been inaccurate anyways considering their track record over the past 6 years).

WWII ended the Great Depression. All of those social programs didn't amount to much of anything towards ending those really bad times.

I would have to disagree with you partially there. I believe that the Great Depression just ended... remember the Depression was global, us using social programs would not end it. Social programs cost money, and money did not flow then...

I believe that a massive growth happened after the war, and that growth was slowed near 1960...

Social programs were pretty much a little bit of welfare, if you had no phone, car, or (I believe) owned a home... enough for our people to survive... not what we see today. So yes social programs were needed then, but our economy is thriving right now (there is question if it will diminish, but in the here and now, we are very very good). There is no need for lots of social programs right now.

Depends who you ask, but more often than not you'll get that answer. It kept a lot of people from starving though, that's for sure.

Sure. Absolutely, but the question where is the need today, our unemplyment rate is amongst the lowest in the world, and our poverty line is the highest.

Like I said, as a broad policy I don't approve, but I can see the need for it as a stop gap.
