Aopen fm56-px modem w/ windows XP

I have a problem using the FM56-px fax/modem in Windows XP. Each time I dial up I get an error message (error 721) stating that the remote computer will not connect. Other modems work fine at this location. Is there a setting that needs to change for this modem to function properly? It worked fine on old system using windows 98.

Have you installed the latest drivers from Aopen?

Downloaded this last night. It is a 231 page manual in PDF format. Latest drivers I see for this are from either 2002 or 2003. This was purchased in the last 6 months and I feel that I have latest drivers on their CD.

Oh, I would never assume a CD has the most recent drivers. These CD's are sometimes over a year old by the time they reach a consumer.

Hi,

First of all CTSNKY is exactly correct so I would suggest you follow his advice on the drivers. I would bet that the drivers on the CD are NOT the most recent because they update those quite often.

What I would do after you download the latest drivers would be to do the following:

Go into the device drivers area and delete all references to a modem.

Shut down, move the modem to PCI #3 (third slot down from the AGP)

Power up and enter BIOS setup

When you enter, then make sure with XP that you have the PnP area DISABLED for this operating system.

Save and Exit

Reboot and follow the advice that
CTSNKY gave you on the drivers.

It will tell you probably when you try to install that they are not digitally signed, but pay no attention to that. Oh, win XP drivers are only v.90 and are very outdated. You actually need the V.92 drivers for proper operation.

Hope this helps.

More of the same (fx56-px)

I have loaded most recent drivers, moved the modem, checked the BIOs etc. The unit will still not connect. It dials through, says that it is verifying username and password, then I get screen stating that the remote computer will not connect. I have plugged my laptop into the jack. It connects fine. I must assume that it is the modem in my unit that is causing the problem. It seems that I am so close to connecting. There has to be a switch not activated, or something I am not doing. Any assistance is appreciated.
