Advice to New Visitors

In response to a post asking for help, I was advised to get some coffee. Good advice. Step back, take a breather, relax - when attacked for no reason.

A personal pet peve in forums such as this one, people who show up, without introduction, and get all "uppity" or just plain rude.

Although I too,am new to this forum, I do moderate on another and have seen this type of behavior a few times.

So, this is to people who, like me, are new.

1.) Introduce yourself. Please explain your background and familiarity with computers, or whatever topic the forum is discussing. If you're a "newbie" and are looking to learn, say so - hopefully, more advanced people will look kindly upon you and help you along the path to knowledge. If you're a professional or an expert, others may look to you to share your experience and wisdom.

2.) Communication. A large portion of human communication is nonverbal. It is a lot easier to know when someone is teasing with you or when they're getting angry or frustrated when one can talk to them face to face. Therefore, in this environment, one's communicative abilities are hindered. Emoticons help to communicate feelings, however they're not always successful.

Therefore, it is even more imperitavite to attempt to remain positive and polite than it would otherwise be in normal communication.

3.) Spelling. Everyone makes mistakes spelling and typing. However, there is something to be said for the written language and plodding through someones atrocious spelling and poor grammar is tedious and time consuming for us all. Please try to spell well and use some semblance of grammar. If English is not your native tounge and you're having some difficulty with the language itself, please feel free to say so, or mention your nationality in your introduction (#1) and people will be more understanding.

4.) What I learned in Kindergarden - If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything.
