Overclocking

Posted 12-25-2008 at 06:46 AM by Aus_Karlos

Merry Christmas everyone!!!!
I thought this was as good as any other time to write a blog.

Ive only just started Overclocking really this is my first system that is my own in which if it breaks no other family member will mind.
Anyway.

My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-N680SLI-DQ6 - BIOS Version FBD (Rev v2.0) and the CPU im using is an Intel Core2 Duo E6750 2.66ghz 4MB L2.

=======================================================
Stock Clock is as followed.

CPU: 2.66ghz, Stepping G0, max FSB speed is 1333mhz or 333mhz Quad Pumped, Vcore@1.350v

Motherboard: FSB: 333mhz - 1.25v, N-bridge - 1.25v , S-bridge - 1.5v.

RAM: 5-5-5-18 800mhz @ 1.8v, 59.1ns latency
=====================================================
Max stable overclock obtained.

CPU: 3.20ghz @ 1.365v

M/B: FSB - 400mhz (1666mhz) 1.3v, N-bridge @ 1.30v, S-bridge @ 1.55v

RAM: 5-5-5-18 800mhz @ 2.00v, 41.9ns latency
=====================================================

Ive managed a 20% overclock on Liquid Cooling, using a standard Liquid cooling kit for $200. Full load temps are around 48c-50c while it idles at 30c-35c. My Northbridge sensor diode detects the motherboard at 50c when under full load for 6hrs (reason why i cannot overclock any higher) however the copper plating that covers most of my M/B is a scorching 70c-80c i burnt the tip of my finger when i first touched it. Attaching some fans to vent the heat was a good idea.

Unlinking the CPU and RAM frequencies to obtaining a 1:1 ratio is crucial for a stable OC. Also locking the multiplier at 8 is a good idea (8x400 = 3200)

The E6750s theoretical clock limit is 3.20ghz stated on an Intel site. This has proven true however i was able to clock it at 3.40ghz for a short time before i was unable to boot to Vista even raising the CPU Vcore to 1.38v, FSB to 1.35v, N/B to 1.35v, S/B to 1.6v and raising the HT link 0.5v it still failed to boot.

Also the E6750 is able to obtain a stable OC of 3.20ghz with Vcore at stock. However it wasn't the case for me.
On full load the CPU now consumes a massive 119.3W of power which is more than some of the 6 and 7 series graphics cards from Nvidia. Where at stock clock it was only consuming 75W-90W. So this CPU can be very power hungry so make sure you have the right power supply for the job.

But thats nothing compared to my 2x GTX280s which with a combine total consumption of 800W @ 78A (At complete full load this is, its usually around 700W @ 60-75A)
