briggs will not stay running

Have a 6.25 briggs and stratton craftsman lawn mower that starts and runs great. It stays running for about 5 minutes then quits. Will not restart till later on or the next day. Have changed the spark plug, cleaned out gas tank, changed air filter, and checked carb. Please help.

Re: briggs will not stay running

Please post a model number and anything else to help us identfy what you have. The number off the engine should be enough. For briggs its usually stamped on the outside of the engine somewhere. Just look around an you will find it.
Sorry without knowing more we don't know what the engine uses.

As a start, I would check if it has spark when it won't run.

Re: briggs will not stay running

Is all the blower tin on the motor and free from obstructions? You could have an overheating problem and be seizing your motor. Will she still crank over after she quits running?

Re: briggs will not stay running

Run it until it shuts off, then immediately remove the spark plug (watch out, it'll be hot) and test for spark. If spark is present, let it set for a while, then restart it, but this time remove the gas cap and see if it continues running. If it does, replace the gas cap.

Re: briggs will not stay running

It sounds like a resriction to fuel flow to me. Check for grass of other contaminates in the fuel tank. When the motor is cold remove the fuel line and see how much fuel flows ot the tube, should be a good flow.

Re: briggs will not stay running

To add to outhouse, also check the flue filter. Also, if it is a gravity feed system (no fuel pump, sorry I don't know if it is or not), you have to watch which fuel filter you put on. Some filters are too strong and will prevent the gas from moving as fast as it should be.
