6.5 B&S yanks cord out of hand

I have a 6.5 briggs and stratton on a murry mower. Up untill today it sarted with no issues but has a roaming rpm issue. Today I went to start and it backfired out exhaust and ripped cord out of my hand. It bucked so hard that it loosened the blade mounting bolt. I tightened bolt and tried again this time it had hard spots when pulling cord and a significant amount of white smoke puffing out of exhaust. Oil level is good and clean. I removed air filter and tried but same result. Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: 6.5 B&S yanks cord out of hand

Check the flywheel pin. Sounds like it may have slipped and moved the flywheel off center and that prevents it from firing properly. Visually, you can see if it is off center and has slipped (actually bends the pin so it is off center) and offset it from dead center slot. That is easy to do if you might have hit something while mowing.

If that is it, it is an easy fix, remove the flywheel, put a new pin in and put the flywheel back. Should fix the issue if that is the problem.

Is the pin you're talking about the key on the shaft?

Thanks for the help. That was it. As soon as i got off the drive for the pull cord i was able to see it. I replaced the key slapped it back together and it worked fine.

That is great news. I have had a few of those from time to time, but anyhow an easy fix if you know that is the issue. Don't be a stranger on here, stick around and enjoy the forum.
