[SOLVED] 1986 johnson 90 hp v4
i have bought a 1986 johnson 90 hp v4 that has set up for 10 years -i rebuilt the carbs ,new spark plugs --and it cranked ---but would only run using the choke. i took the carbs back off and checked them -i had missed two jets ---it is extra clean now but it floods out easy and sometimes will not crank at all.-i know i have the floats set correctly---any suggestions?

re: 1986 johnson 90 hp v4
Does you carb have an idle adjustment screw? I read before tuning it up to have it at about a turn and a half open (but that is for my B&S riding mower engine, so it might now be the same.
In the end it didn't help my case because I wasn't getting great compression. I had to change the piston rings, they were really worn. Last edited by macadameane; 09-11-2009 at 11:04 AM. Reason: further details |

re: 1986 johnson 90 hp v4
preset-no adjustment screws
after i posted the question -i thought about it --i am going to change out the gas today --it has been setting for awhile--i might have been chocking it too much after i rebuilt the carbs.--we will see this weekend i was really shocked when it cranked at all -it has been sitting out under some pine trees since 1999--i have replaced all the gas lines -replaced the fuel pump --and changed the plugs -- |

re: 1986 johnson 90 hp v4
Got her fixed ---i took off the fly wheel and cleaned it up --hot battery --runs like a new one --only other thing I have to fix is the cables --they are stiff and will not work correctly--Do I have to replace them or is there a way to correct them ---I have sprayed wd-40 and worked them but they still act as if they are locked up --remember this boat set up for 10 years ,

WD-40 is great for rust and corrosion, but it is a poor lubricant in the long run. In can actually get sticky. Get a silicone spray and try that after clearing corrosion (if any).

I like to use PB Blaster. It is better than WD 40:
http://www.acehardwaresuperstore.com...70.html?ref=42 It should be available at most automotive part stores. BG |

Hmmm.... I'm not sure how exactly the thing's moving, but it its a cable that need to perminently soak up something like that, some good ol' engine grease rubbed into it might be better (unless its somewhere where it would just burn easy), problem with Silicone (my previous suggestion) is that it may come out over a short time.
