Toro won't start

I was given a toro 6.5 hp self propeled mower. It won't start. New spark plug and has good spark. tried spraying ether in air intake and spark plug hole (different days)still nothing. It does seem to make a clanking noise and then will yank starter cord from my hand. It looks like the last owner had put a brand new blade on it? Possibly he hit something and now won't run?
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The flywheel key is sheared. You'll need to get a new key, remove the top engine housing, then remove the flywheel and install the new key.
